so robert campbell joined the fifth texas infantry. he showed up in the spring of 1862, and fought in his first major battle on we're coming up june 27. on that anniversary. that was where he saw his first major action. his first combat wound came at the battle of second manassas, which if you know anything about the fifth texas that's not surprising. they were heavily engaged there. his two wounds to his leg sent him home on a medical furlough , and after recovering, robert , campbell rejoined the fifth texas in time for another battle in september of 1863, where he was wounded in the leg again, as well as the arm. too badly hurt to continue infantry service, robert campbell did not seek a medical discharge. instead, he secured an appointment as a courier at texas brigade headquarters. at the battle of the wilderness in may of 1864, robert campbell was the last brigade courier on the field. at least 10 careers had been killed, wounded, or sent back for more ordnance in. after his horse was killed in battle in 1864, september, campbell
