there's actually very little media about what's happening on campuses. there's also been a weird completion of issues. this headline is incoherent. federal crackdown on campus assault and free speech. only if you think of sexual assault as sexual harassment is it sometimes related to speech. in truth, professors were often full of themselves but if you really believe were the greatest, you far overestimated our ability. i think it's important to recognize the safety aspect here not to rely on the criminal justice system but imagine someone who's an accused murderer. it may take years. everyone may graduate we might have robbers. universities have long dealt with these issues under campus safety code. they also expel students or suspend them pending the investigation. so one of my arguments here is that a four going to focus on legislation to correct the shortcomings of title ix and deal with this problem, maybe we need to have a safety statue because in some ways it might lessen some of the backlash that has occurred against the sexual assault on campus.

today's campuses and steeped in the spirit of the lincoln douglas debates. one of the things we've lost and i've come to realize how much we lost it. a lot of kids read john stuart mill's on liberty. they read john milton, they read sort of classics of free speech, david jefferson and de tocqueville. fewer students do that now although i must say it is pretty sound on the narrow question. but one of the unanticipated consequences of dropping so many required courses and books is that the free-speech classics are no longer as known as they once were when i was in college. i must have read on liberty four or five times for different classes. it kept coming up and now you can easily go through most schools without ever reading on liberty even ones. so one used to be able to assume there was a kind of common culture of liberty or free-speech that you could fall back on and that is less true now, but it has sort of inspired me to begin to assign liberty and the american government and other courses where i wouldn't necessarily have assigned before just to get in
