it is important for us to remember the economic fundamentals in the canada u.s. economic relationship. not only foritive canada but also for the united states. this is a trading relationship that works for both sides. it works for our american friends even to their preferred measure. are starting to see a recognition of that among many americans. i was heartened to see 76 members of congress sign a letter talking about the benefit of nafta. i think that it is important for us to be approaching these negotiations with a spirit of goodwill and speaking win-win solutions and compromises and that is what we are doing. having said that, i think our approach is to hope for the best and prepare for the worst and canada is certainly prepared for every eventuality. want a good deal, not just any deal. >> the u.s. is not offering any counterproposals of their own. >> let me be very clear that canada will always negotiate with the spirit of goodwill. seeking mutually beneficial alwaysises, we will defend our natural -- national interest. while we have made some very good con
