>> we are going to get the latest from susan candiotti. she's been on top of it all night long and joins us from times square. susan. >> reporter: hi, john. what a difference a night makes. last evening at this hour, much of times square was blocked off. now, things are almost back to normal. the investigation is going on with a lot of intensity. they are trying to find out where the vehicle is and who the registered owner was. police tell us they know the name of the person to whom the car was registered. they tell us the car is in the tri-state area. that means anywhere with a new york or new jersey or connecticut. they haven't pinned it down just yet. john. >> suzanne, hours and hours of video tapes from the surveillance cameras. what have they released and what are the questions we are waiting to have answered? >> reporter: one of the things is they have images they were able to capture from surveillance cameras. there are thousands around new york city. they show the nissan pathfinder as it was coming down the strip near times square

i think we've lost susan candiotti. we'll try to get her back. we did get an all clear from the nypd. the police department has said this is not the threat they feared it may be. they've given the all clear, which means no doubt they will open traffic there, for a lot of people that have been stuck, the bridge will reopen very shortly. and they will be towing that vehicle away very shortly, and hopefully as the night goes on, we'll get the true story of everything that happened with that vehicle. the good part of the story is, however, that this does not appear to be a terrorist threat or a bomb of any sort, which, of course, many of us feared as we looked at this this evening. that's the latest from new york tonight. a lot of things developing, but we will keep an eye on it throughout the night. you can count on that. the bridge has been reopened or will be reopened shortly, and police say that the situation is under control, and this vehicle will be towed away, not a terrorist threat. just a very exciting evening in new york city as they dealt

and we're following all the developments here with susan candiotti, drew griffin. everybody is on the story. of course, we'll bring you the latest information as we get it here on cnn. a lot of talk has been made about also the surveillance video and, drew, do you just want to talk about the significance of this surveillance tapes? and also whether authorities ever got their hand on the tape that that pennsylvania tourist had in his hands? >> reporter: actually, we do have some reports. they withheld that tourist video from pennsylvania. they were going to release that. they withheld that. it may not have been the suspect. that is something that we are trying to chase down. of greater value is the vehicle in all this and the videotape of that vehicle, and in particular, the license plate and the registration on that vehicle which led them to connecticut. it's unclear of the significance of that tape that was released showing a man looking back at the vehicle. we just do not know at this time to say if that is the suspect. what we do know is the suspect -- a suspect

our susan candiotti is on the scene now and joins us live. what can you tell us?s whole thing started. the explanation we're getting from the new york city police official is that they tracked down the owner of the car by tracing the license tag. and the owner of the car explained the two gas cans in the back of the car because he was mowing some lawns. he's not a professional landscaper. he says that's why he has the gas cans in the back of the vehicle. to recap here, this was -- a four door olds mobile '91 model that had an american flagsticker on the back. an employee ofcon-edison, they saw the gas cans in the back. the car is parked in front of the kolg hutch con-ed building. they flew the windows out of the car. then following that a bomb squad team wearing protective clothing carefully approached the vehicle and now we're seeing the gas cans are outside in the middle of the street while they examined it while investigators went to work. but now as you heard, a police official tells us that they hope to be wrapping this up very soon, the scene very soon. in t

susan candiotti will join us with more details what happened. are you there? >> reporter: i am.nhattan bound u-haul truck with arizona plates driving to the blongs. its driver, according to witnesses jumped from the truck and ran. when the operator approached the truck, he backed off after he smelled strong smoke. officials have closed the truck in all directions and an nyu bomb squad is responding. you can imagine what traffic backup this would be, a very highly traveled bridge serving a number of boroughs there and popular road for people coming back from the airport as well. >> as i understand, the point of view we're tending to see on this traffic camera is pointing toward manhattan from the bronx. you said this happened just a short distance away from the toll booths on the manhattan side, is that correct? >> that's right. the driver appeared to have been approaching manhattan from the bronx, when he stopped his truck and abandoned it and ran away from it. this caught the eyes of the witnesses and the tollbooth operator left where he was wanting to know what this was all ab

our national correspondent, susan candiotti, has been working this part of the story for us. >> wolf, today we went to a town in pennsylvania, and we talked to the owner of phantom fireworks. we also spoke with a young store clerk who was as surprised as anyone that he apparently sold a few fireworks to someone who turned out to be an accused terrorist. >> i remember him coming in just an unremarkable customer, you know? he didn't pose as any kind of threat or didn't raise any flags. just seemed like an average person, and he said, high, how are you? he gave me his i.d. and processed his information and he went about his business. >> lee bought about $100 worth of rockets and a tube that sprays color sparks into the air, silver salutes they're called and some green safety fuse. they say faisal shahzad is on the store surveillance cameras and they turned over that video to the fbi. but just like bomb experts, the company's officials are scratching their heads over faisal shahzad would have used fireworks. as he claims to have told fbi agents to make a bomb. >> there really is
