. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. new video this morning of what was left behind after an overnight fire. broke out in san jose near interstate 280 and bird avenue. crews headed to the scene about 1:30 this morning after getting calls of trees on fire. a few trees burned along with debris. the fire was knocked down quickly. no word yet on a cause. >>> now this comes as san jose firefighters are coming from an exhausting day yesterday. two brush fires had crews scrambling to gain the upper hand overnight. just six miles away, much larger fire crept dangerously close to homes in the hills above the neighborhood. we have reporters there this morning. here you see some of the overnight scene, some of the folks waking up to the fire hoess and caution tape. it was a close call for about a dozen homes. no homes burned. started it about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. and you had that dry, you had the wind and the dry brush causing four alarm fire. the helicopters and ground crews used to fight that fire. two were injured. we haven

from the north, heavy artillery. 105-millimeter cannons, 155-meter howitzers. now ground troops have pushed their way into northern gaza. we've also seen and heard the air strikes and choppers circling, jets circling as well. what seemed like a window of opportunity for peace earlier today with the cease-fire, was slammed shut as now the fighting and ground offensive has begun. it appeared this morning the cease-fire would end before even beginning. a dozen hamas fighters tunneled under the israeli/gaza border with rpgs, ak-47s and other weapons. the military believes this was a bold attempt to infiltrate, kill and possibly kidnap israelis. hamas and israel agreed to the cease-fire for the united nations to bring relief supplies to gaza. today was the first time hundreds of thousands of palestinians who have been holed up in their homes for the past ten days were finally able to get back to some semblance of normalcy without fearing for their lives. the crowds scrambled to withdraw money from the atms before the cease-fire ended this afternoon in gaza. you can

cannon fire from offshore. we've seen helicopter, most likely apache hellfire missiles bearing down on targets. we've seen to the east, a great deal of fighting, heavy artillery fighting. that is where those ground forces are amassed right now. we've seen on the ground, we've seen the tanks with 105-mill mere cannon. we've sear 155-cannons. and the infantry to go along with it. the tunnel busters. massive bulldozers that can take a direct hit from a land mine, or roadside bomb. they go in, they dig out those tunnels. that is what the israeli military is going after from day one, shepard. that is what the target has been. the underground tunnel stretching from south to north, from east to west, that hamas, according to military officials, has used for the storage and transportation of its long-range, medium and short-range rockets. two rockets in particular of great concern, m-75s, m-302s. m-302s have a range of up to 200 miles. right now it's quiet. we see tracer fire in the distance, but we're expecting things

. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >>> breaking news to start this morning, heavy police presence in the downtown area of san jose. >> "today in the bay's" derek shore just got to the scene near plaza decesar chavez, tell us the latest here. >> reporter: over the last couple minutes, this has turned fatal. someone died. it was originally a stabbing. i'm going to steb out of the way. we can take a look at this very big scene. we're on park avenue where south mission intersects. you can see police have the entire intersection shut down in between is plaza decesar chavez, and we believe that is where an altercation took place and one man was stabbed to death. scanner reports show that that man may have been stabbed in his neck and back. as you can see, south market is shut down at park avenue which will affect people getting in and out of the downtown dor competitor here -- corridor here. again, reports are that one man has been stabbed to death. he was reported to have been taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead there. as for a suspect being in custody. th

they had a longer range than the cannons. the cannons at the fort only had a range of about a mile. it wasn't accurate but terrifying when they were landing over you. >> when we thought about doing this exhibition, one of the things we wanted people to understand was some of the bombardment. what was a bombardment? so we weren't even sure at the time when we did the exhibition that we had a rocket in our collection. we did a search through our records and found that we did have one, but it was without the pole, in fact. so we had to make sure that it looked like what it would have looked like at the time of the war, so we added the pole. so that is an added piece. but the rocket itself is actually from that period. it doesn't look very foreboding, but when you hear it. we've recently been able to hear someone actually launch a congary rocket as a reenactment. they are frightening. it was a psychological rocket that could go very far. you could see the trajectory. you could see the flare as it traveled across the sky. you can imagine being at the fortification where these things were

"today in the bay's" bob redell live outside the courthouse in santa cruz where tichelman will appear in hours. >> reporter: good morning, though alix tichelman arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, it's the d.a.'s office who has chosen to charge the lesser crime of manslaughter, telling us that, as of right now, thus far, the evidence doesn't support otherwise. and the main piece of evidence, according to the prosecution, is video that allegedly shows tichelman injecting the former exec with heroin and doing nothing to help him as he convulsed and died. the 26-year-old prosecute had an ongoing pay for sex relationship with hayes when the two met on his yacht. it was a surveillance camera on board his vessel that captured his death. hayes, 51 years old, married with five children, had a long, successful

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. new this morning, san jose police on the scene of a deadly crash in the south bay. this is santa teresa boulevard and miyuki. just before 2:00 a.m., a car veered off the road and went into a try. the driver died at the scene. police say it's too early to determine if alcohol or drugs played a part in that crash. >>> a woman will face a judge this morning accused of murdering an executive on his yacht. bob redell is live with more. prosecutor says they have video of the killing. >> they do. they have video that shows the murder itself. alix tichelman, a 26-year-old woman from folsom who police say is a prostitute, she will be arraigned on a charge that she killed forest hayes. last november while the two were on his yacht in the small boat harbor here in santa cruz. police tell us they have the surveillance video from his vessel that shows the two meeting on board and it shows tichelman allegedly injecting hays with a lethal dose of heroine, causing him to overdose and die. what shocke

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. >> president obama back in the bay area. a brief stop on his three-day fund-raising trip. he has a couple of events planned before he hops back on to air force one to leave town. we'll check in with more details on that in a few minutes. but first, developing news out of the middle east. new explosions in gaza overnight as israel continues its offensive. hamas fighting backing launching rockets into israel. one rocket landed a few miles from the airport in tel aviv, forcing the faa to ban u.s. airlines flying into and out of the airport. hours ago, israel opened a nearby airport in case the faa lifts that ban.
