the second-biggest canyon in the west. it was really something. it became toward the end of the comanche era ground zero. it has always been a winter camp, but it was all just this unbelievably gorgeous river cut, stream cut canyon cut place where you could hide. ultimately the war was fought in and out of the canyon because it was such a great place to hide. but i think it's -- they were nomads. i think historically they would in-depth in palo duro canyon before winter. it just became part of their society. one of the most interesting moments in the history of the west -- i describe this in my book. at some point this a you have to let us out on another buffalo punt. you have to let us out of the reservation. we would like to go on a buffalo hunt. we lobbied for that. they finally let them go. they trust quanah at this point. they go out. they are shocked and astonished that they find no buffalo. by this point most of the buffalo have been killed. well, they get to palo duro canyon, and lo and behold they find out that a white guy on the. a guy n

blue canyon? after all, the sun is out. but these big snowbanks are evidence of the big storm that rolled through here earlier this morning. i want to take you through the morning up here. this is in the 5:00 hour. the snow was coming downside ways. we had lots of gusting winds in excess of 40 miles an hour, at least at the highest elevations. the roads were a wreck, covered in snow and ice. and as you might expect, there were a number of spinouts and minor crashes, nothing serious. we hit the snow about 5,000 feet in the sierras. the rain, though, especially around 3,000 feet, was bad enough that we were hydroplaning around and in the snow we were sliding around. so it was a treacherous drive for folks up here. by mid-morning, plows were coming through getting everything cleared. the snow tapered off and since then, it's actually been nice up here. the wind died down, the snow has stopped for now. but to give you some perspective about how much we have up here, the sierra snowpack already at 200%

the blue canyon rain gauge has recorded well over 7 inches of rain, yet here at blue canyon o n, the ground, we have barely 6 inches of snow. i expected more snow. finally the snow level has come down to where we are at blue can up. 5,000 feet. can you see around us here just a light snow this morning. that's been the nature of this snow. just a very intermittent and light snowshower. this latist flurry coming through, if this keeps up, i wouldn't be surprised if they bump chain control back on the mountain. caltrans is trying to keep up with the latest storm. at the top of the sierra some r esorts are recording more than 10 feet of snow. across the sierra there have been avalanche warnings posted. near kirk wood. they continue to do avalanche control. a lot of activity up here in the mountains. but with this light snow right now and a little break in the forecast. if you are planning any travel over the hills, i would say the latter part of today an tomorrow will be the safest bet. definitely be ready travel wherever you're going. >> before you go -- go, i'm just curious, you do spe

he joins us from blue canyon along interstate 80. nick, good morning. i tell you, i'm just shivering looking at you standing out there. >> good morning. you know what? you probably should be. it's about 25 degrees up here. plenty cold. not a lot in the way of precipitation. but it's been sort of on and off, rather unpredictable. aside from the fresh snow from yesterday, look at the hail that fell up here at blue canyon at 5300 feet. you can see it on the bumper of our truck. it looks like snow but it stings. it's definitely not snow. it's hail because we're right around freezing. so it would be rain, it could be snow, but it ended up being hail. as for the roads they are an absolute mess as you might imagine after that big storm that rolled through yesterday. more on the way, as well. we are driving up past gold run. that is where we noticed the streets getting wet and certainly closer to blue canyon that's where we willly noticed the temperature dropping -- really noticed the temperature dropping and that's where the snow and ice is built up on the roa

conditions absolutely brutal up here in blue canyon. you can see the snow is falling. kind of a wet snow because we're hovering right around freezing. the wind that we saw earlier has died down just a bit but still gusting and when it does so, it pushes the snow sideways really making visibility tough. as you see, interstate 80 is snow covered. it is very slick. we have already been up here a number of times this season but i have to say, this morning is probably the worst conditions we have seen as far as the roads go because as you approach the snow, about 3,000 feet, there's so much rain you actually start to hydroplane once you hit the snow about 5,000 feet. then you start to slide around quite a bit. already this morning, we have seen a number of crashes on eastbound 80 over on highway 50, there's actually a phone line that was down that was blocking traffic. they had one way traffic controls in place around twin bridges and myers. so suffice to say it is a mess up here and probably will be for much. morning as these conditions worsen, really, as the snow continue

this is a live look from blue canyon. mountains still seeing a blast of snow. winter weather advisory has been extended until 3:00 this afternoon. thinking about going up there, more than 6 feet of snow has fallen there since friday. >>> we are still on storm watch in the bay area. the same system bringing the snowfall, that beautiful snowfall to the sierra continues to dump rainfall on us here in the bay area. it's coming down pretty heavy, moving into nevada and san francisco, and outside the oakland and berkeley area. we have yellows and orange in there, and that's where you're more likely to rain into heavy rainfall. our forecast for today, what can you expect? cloudy with rainfall for the morning. few showers thrown in there. into the afternoon, the best chance of rainfall for the morning, but eventually if you move into the afternoon, it will taper off to a chance of scattered showers. chance of rainfall lessening later into the day, and highs in the mid- to upper 50s. here's a look at our satellite and radar, boy, this latest storm system dumping quite a
