blue canyon? after all, the sun is out. but these big snowbanks are evidence of the big storm that rolled through here earlier this morning. i want to take you through the morning up here. this is in the 5:00 hour. the snow was coming downside ways. we had lots of gusting winds in excess of 40 miles an hour, at least at the highest elevations. the roads were a wreck, covered in snow and ice. and as you might expect, there were a number of spinouts and minor crashes, nothing serious. we hit the snow about 5,000 feet in the sierras. the rain, though, especially around 3,000 feet, was bad enough that we were hydroplaning around and in the snow we were sliding around. so it was a treacherous drive for folks up here. by mid-morning, plows were coming through getting everything cleared. the snow tapered off and since then, it's actually been nice up here. the wind died down, the snow has stopped for now. but to give you some perspective about how much we have up here, the sierra snowpack already at 200%

no reason to drink it will be a white christmas at blue canyon 5,000 ft. interstate 80 behind me. fairly slow right now local forecast for-8 in. in the neighborhood i don't know if we will get back but we got snow. chain controls as always when the weather turns like this. the sign is up there chain growth controls for 20 mi. down through blue canyon. we had to slap the chain's or cables on the kron 4 newsman. you can see what happens when they put the chain controls the you pull over and put the chains on yourself. or you can hide yourself somebody have them put them on you can see this snow building up on the side of the man. a lot of for will drives out there so the chain installer say it's not a great despite all the snow. make no mistake if you don have chains you have regular car they will take look to make sure you have them of good snow tires or four-wheel-drive. if get on 80 and you could see what that looks like. it is fairly treacherous spill blood is 30 mi. an hour when you have chains on. a word to the why is it your headed up for the christma

conditions absolutely brutal up here in blue canyon. you can see the snow is falling. kind of a wet snow because we're hovering right around freezing. the wind that we saw earlier has died down just a bit but still gusting and when it does so, it pushes the snow sideways really making visibility tough. as you see, interstate 80 is snow covered. it is very slick. we have already been up here a number of times this season but i have to say, this morning is probably the worst conditions we have seen as far as the roads go because as you approach the snow, about 3,000 feet, there's so much rain you actually start to hydroplane once you hit the snow about 5,000 feet. then you start to slide around quite a bit. already this morning, we have seen a number of crashes on eastbound 80 over on highway 50, there's actually a phone line that was down that was blocking traffic. they had one way traffic controls in place around twin bridges and myers. so suffice to say it is a mess up here and probably will be for much. morning as these conditions worsen, really, as the snow continue
