and the arch leads down into a canyon that opens up and you go up a side canyon into this little alcove where a piece of the ceiling has fallen just slightly. and i found this place. the first time i found this was on the 27th day of a back pack and i got up to this spot and i took my hat off and i stuck my head in the crack, which is something that i do frequently out there, because i know every once in a while you're going it see something back inside one of these cracks. and back in this crack there was a basket about 1500 years old that had been turned upside down so it wouldn't collect anything and it was way back down in the crack so that no light or wind would touch it. and it was in perfect condition. you could put it on your kitchen table. you could put apples in it. and as far as i know, it's still there except for that piece which we went on this trip to collect a piece for radio carbon dating, a federal archeologist in southern utah had asked us to pick up one piece of it to bring out. so that part of the basket is missing. there are artifacts everywhere. they stand out. thi

but there's more to the grand canyon than rocks. the canyon itself is a geologically active feature, a changing and evolving land form that's a monument to the power of running water. the colorado river carved this enormous valley over the last nine million years. in fact, the river carries about half a million tons of sediment past any point in the canyon every day. no wonder this great river has been described as too thin to walk on, but too thick to drink. rivers like the colorado, are powerful geologic agents that disrupt and reshape the surface of continents. the energy of running water in a river channel is transformed into processes that erode rock and sediment from the bottom of the channel and carry it downstream. as the river deepens its channel, the sides of the valley steepen and grow unstable. eventually mass wasting processes are triggered, causing these slopes to fail. this delivers even more sediment to the river and widens the river valley even further. in order to understand the influence of running water on the ea

when you walk down into the bottom of the narrow canyons made of sandstone and you put your hands on the sand stone faces and the smooth shallow scallops that look like champagne glasses, you can feel the shape of the last flood that came through. every place in the desert is a story. every place is a passage way. it's really hard to walk very far in the desert for me because there are so many stories that start opening up and lead you from place to place and place and soon you start picking up the patterns of wind, of rain. you pick up the patterns of people who were there before you because, out there, things seem to last forever. if you put a footprint down in certain places, that footprint will stay for 5 years, maybe even 10 years for somebody who's got a really good eye where you come walking along and you see the slightest depression in the ground and you kneel at it and you figure out that it was a person with about a size 9 foot walking across the desert 8 years before you. everything out there tells a story. that's why i'm here. because i'm looking for stories. i'm looking
