the exhibit is over the edge, fred harvey at the grand canyon and in the great southwest. the heard museum has a collection of more than 4000 objects that the fred harvey company collected, mostly between 1901 and the early 1940's. our exhibit focuses on the bigger story about the harvey company, but also about their work with native american art, their work with the santa fe railway, and particularly the work that they did in arizona at the grand canyon and in other parts of the state. to the u.s.came from england and the 1850's as a teenager, and he began working in restaurants as a dishwasher and a bus boy, and then continued in the restaurant business. he had some success. he had some failed businesses. he formed a870's, partnership with the santa fe railway to provide food service at the railroad stops. at that time, from all accounts, the food was pretty bad. a bit ofey brought elegance to dining along the santa fe. he had linens, china, and crystal, and fresh food, and this really change railroad travel. s health begin to fail and the late 1800s, and his son took ov

they're both experienced canyoneers, skilled at getting through canyons by any means possible. that includes climbing, rappeling or even swimming. >> i've always loved the outdoors. i've been an avid hiker. but this canyoneering sport, it takes hiking to a whole new level, and i started dabbling in that about three years ago. >> i've been doing canyoneering for about a year with eric. >> this time, david is also going to be a cameraman. >> we thought it would be great to have it on camera and we could show other people what we do. >> but what they're about to record is their worst nightmare. eric is planning to rappel 300 feet into the beautiful but dangerous englesteed canyon. >> you can't really see the bottom of it. it kind of blows your mind away, just the scenery of it. >> they choose a spot and david helps eric set up for the rappel. >> i quickly noticed how tall, how far 300 feet is. i was very, very nervous. there are all sorts of factors that can lead to death and injury, as you rappel. >> they seem to have all the equipment. except for a helmet, a key piece of safety

another way native people could work at the canyon was as greeters, dance performers.ne individual was joe, who through family members we have learned, up with the idea to wear a plains headdress even though he was hopi. he came up with this concept so that people could recognize him as a native american indian. he was at the grand canyon for a number of years as a greeter and perform dances on the south rim. in 1903 when president theodore roosevelt was visiting albuquerque, the harvey company planned to have a textile woven for him in recognition of his visit. the harvey company had a weaver, she wove the textile in red, white, and blue, and had his name and the date and commemorated his visit. she would go on to work for the harvey company for about 20 years, and with photography as it was at that time, we see her in front of the alvarado hotel when douglas fairbanks came to town, when mary pickford came to town, so she was an ambassador of sorts for the fred harvey company. one of the things -- when we have a photograph like the one behind us, we like to see if we

she risked her life to save her family when they became stranded near the grand canyon. reporter katherine scott has these dramatic details live in our satellite center. katherine. >> reporter: matt this started thursday afternoon for this family. their car was stuck. they had no cell signal. it was freezing cold. so the mother decided she would try to hike to the nearest highway to try to get help not realizing that the highway was closed for the winter. she wasn't found until early saturday morning. she's now being treated for severe frost bite. >> i just kept moving forward thinking if i don't get there then -- i can't -- i'm not going to survive another night. lucky to be alive karen klein from palmer township is recovering in utah. her husband eric by her side. the associate professor at northampton community college hiked for 26 miles for more than 30 hours in the snowy wilderness near the grand canyon to try to save her stranded family. >> my son needs his mother. my husband needs his wife. you know, i'm not letting my mother bury mism karen eric and their 10-year

they were in vegas and attempted to explore the grand canyon with their gps. the car went into the ditch in a blizzard and the family was trapped with no cell service. karen decided to make the trek to get help. >> i had been eating aspen twigs and twigs from evergreen trees. because i thought i would only be gone for like an hour or two. >> reporter: she was gone more than 30 hours. >> i knew if i fell asleep that i would freeze. >> reporter: scared and without her cellphone -- the battery died -- she stayed awake under a tree. >> the instinct kicks in, you have to protect your family, you have to just keep moving forward. >> reporter: when the sun rose, she walked again, finding an empty ranger station. she broke a window with her elbow and waited inside. >> the first thing i said, officer, i'm so sorry i broke the window, don't arrest me. >> reporter: instead those rangers and rescuers gave karen food and water and evacuated her to a hospital. she wants to thank them and to those of you at home she says, she'll see you soon. she's hoping to be back in the a
