they used to live here in the grand canyon, their ancestors used to live and farm inside the grand canyon about one dozen years ago. there were part of a very widespread culture that we today call ancestral puebloan. the hopis have a long connection with the grand canyon, partly from living here, and it is still very sacred to them. this is where they believe humans emerged into the world, and they believe the souls of their dead return to the grand canyon to reach the afterlife. so the hopis have deeper ties to the grand canyon than any other group of people. it isn't often that science and ancient mythology agree on something, but science is -- science has sort of verified the hopi perspective that this was the place of creation. we are seeing the force of creation here. this is probably the best place on earth to see the forces of creation and the forces of nature from which life and humans emerged. so you're saying deep time here, almost 2 billion years of rocks. the bottom rocks of the grand canyon are almost 2 billion years old, and you are seeing all sorts of geological forces. you

he did manage to make the grand canyon national forest, and there is not much forest in the canyon. along,ddy roosevelt came he was very dedicated to the grand canyon but in a paradoxical way after he was president he went to go mountain lion hunting. they saw a lot of mountain lions there there were hundreds that were killed over the years. the forest cyrus -- forest service hired a ranger to kill the mountain lions and nobody was thinking about what happens when you kill all of the predators. so there was a message population explosion of deer. teddy roosevelt tried to make this a national park and he could not persuade congress to make it a national park. it was given certain protections, but still a lower level of protection than what he wanted. he was dead for a few months before grand canyon became a national park in 1919. he always regrettable he did not make it a national park. partlyly became a park because the railroad was bringing in tourists and arizona thisessman were noticing is worth more than the lions in the canyon. so why are we opposing making this as a national p

grand canyon, sunset cora dora, walnut canyon. tourism is very, very important.and then in the wintertime, the tourists come to enjoy the snow so it's a big part of the economy. today of course a much different story. flagstaff grew rather slowly during the first almost century of its existence. i think by 1950, the community consisted of somewhere around 7000 souls and here we are in 2018. and not counting the 25,000 students at the university where approaching 70,000. so it's a very, very fast growth rate area and things are changingvery fast . so the major employers now instead of being basic industries are ofcourse the university , wl gore, a day have a major presence here and of course flagstaff medical center is a very big employer . as our our united states geological survey and the various government entities, the coconino county and the city of flagstaff and the state government so it's a much different place today and i think for some people, it's probably grown a little bit too big. too fast. but it's a wonderful place. we are very unique in our weathe
