capitol.awmakers evacuating from the house floor. guns were drawn. with me now, edward lawrence. he is inside the capitol hill building. he is at the russell rotunda. edward, what is happening right now? reporter: right now there is multiple reports that the woman who was shot now passed away. she has died. she was shot outside the house chamber. we don't know who shot her or why she was shot. one person possibly according to reports that we're seeing has passed away. there was also tear gas used inside of the capitol to get some of these protesters away. as protesters marched on to d.c., on to the capitol grounds, they came from the mall area, down pennsylvania avenue, unconstitution to the capitol mall area. what happened police were simply overwhelmed. there will be an investigation how folks got in, they seemed overwhelmed when the mob of people came. the doors opened, thousands of people poured into the u.s. capitol. at one point there was a protesting standing at the senate pro tem seat

capitol. by our reckoning both houses, house and senate, have been breached. members of the house and senate have been told to shelter and, yes, we have seen guns drawn in the house chamber, point-blank range. those are gas masks, oxygen hoods handed out to all members of congress, some of whom got behind the railings in the balcony. this is your house and senate and these are our fellow citizens who have, as we say, with ease stormed the u.s. capitol today. we have our entire team, our entire on air family on stand by waiting to talk to us. with me in following hours rachel maddow and nicolle wallace and nicolle wallace, i understand you've been doing some reporting among national security types. >> i spoke to three former senior national security figures, all three of them recognizable to viewers, but i will -- because of the nature of this crisis, i will share something that they all said to me. we are watching and listening to people describe scenes to our colleagues chuck todd and andrea

capitol. we're on the south side of the capitol, so this is the house side. and then just a few minutes later, there were police that quickly cleared a path as that stretcher was brought out. we saw a woman, it was hard to tell whether or not it was a police officer or more likely probably a protestor was on that stretcher. did appear to be a female. clearly a lot of blood and the workers who were tending to her clearly attempting resuscitation efforts trying to provide oxygen. but this was a clearly a severe injury. and you saw the protestors witnessing that and then getting very upset by what they perceived to be violence by the police towards the protesters. and so that has fueled a lot more chaos here even as we have he little information about the status of that person or who that might have been. >> josh, what kind of -- are you seeing much law enforcement presence from your vantage point right now? are. >> reporter: we are seeing some law enforcement at the doors of the capitol. and sor

capitol here. for now it seems like police are holding them back to some degree, but this is the furthest we've ever seen any protesters make their way up toward anything, and when they started moving, large cheers from the crowd here, and for now it seems like police have them stopped at the steps there, but they have broken through the bicycle barricades, the bicycle racks that were here and have made their way up the steps of the u.s. capitol. lester? >> i can't recall, and maybe it's happened, i can't remember protests that have made their way up the steps to the capitol, but it appears capitol police have it under control. i want to bring in michael beschlos. michael, as we were talking a moment ago, the president is losing many of his key supporters -- it was several months ago the issue was raised and will there be a peaceful handover of power? and that question has to loom large again as we watch these objections take place on the capitol, key allies of the president now turning against him

capitol today. you can imagine that they will use that and the video and their forces on the house and senate floor in defiance of the capitol police as part of a recruiting effort to expand their ranks in the days and weeks to come and i think there are many alarming aspects of this, that's one. another one is this tweet we just have seen from a republican national committee spokesman who says earlier today a suspicious device was found at rnc headquarters rnc staff was safely evacuated from the building and the device has been successfully detonated by a bomb squad. that matches the reporting we've seen of potential improvised explosive devices in the capitol itself those are potential terrorist acts by people who, if those are live bombs, could be intending harm to the practitioners of american democracy, the political parties, the members of congress. this is a very dangerous and horrific moment for american democracy, shep, as you were pointing out what we watched with the president-elect is a

capitol but outside the capitol grounds.apitol police describe these explosives as capable of causing great harm. a federal law enforcement source told abc news that the suspected pipe bombs were not hoax devices or imitation devices. they were real bombs. one was found outside the national headquarters of the republican party, the other outside the democratic party national headquarters. both of those buildings were evacuated yesterday after the bombs were discovered. the fbi said its bomb technicians blasted these devices apart with water cannons to make them safe. the investigators are now examining the pieces of the blown-apart bombs for evidence. but again, as far as we know, no arrests or suspects in conjunction with the planting of those explosive devices. if there are people involved in yesterday's attacks who are willing and able to build and plant operable pipe bombs on political targets, those are people who obviously need to be found as quickly as possible. watch this space, i guess. watch this space, i guess. >>

capitol. this is at a time when all u.s. capitol tours are closed. there aren't any of those.here haven't been since march because of covid. but somehow, the day before the attack, republican members of congress are letting lots of people in to access the capitol to show them around, help them orient themselves to the place. she did not say who the groups were or which members of congress gave them this access, but she did call it a reconnaissance for the attack the next day. today, congresswoman sherrill elaborated on that allegation in a letter she sent to the house and senate sergeant-at-arms as well as the head of the capitol police. it's signed by more than 30 members of congress who are backing up what the congresswoman says she saw the day before the riots. they write, "many of the members who signed this letter, as well as various members of our staff, witnessed an extremely high number of outside groups in the capitol complex on tuesday, january 5th, the day before the insurrection attempt. the lawmakers say these tours immediately aroused suspicion because they were
