it is a busy evening on capitol hill. over the last several hours, lawmakers have dramatically backed away from the brink of a big government shutdown. we're not out of the woods yet. with surprising speed and bipartisanship, the house passed a stop-gap spending measure that would fund the government for the next 45 days. the white house has signaled the president will sign it. first it has to get through the senate and that vote may have hit a delay. manu raju is following all of this on capitol hill. i was hoping that it would not be sunset by the time you were able to go home this evening but it seems like that's not the case. you can't count on that on capitol hill. there may be a bit of a wrinkle in the senate in terms of getting to the finish line. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. this is about the issue of ukraine. this bill that is waiting for a final senate approval that got approved in the house to avoid a shutdown does not include emergency aid for ukraine. the senate was trying to get that appr

capitol.hat happened instead was you had republicans in the house of representatives marking their bills at a much lower spending level because of hardliners holding the house floor hostage, arguing that kevin mccarthy had cut a bad deal. so mccarthy turned to them and basically moved forward with a series of spending bills at such lower levels that they were never going to get democratic support. that is what is being alleged here from jeffreys when he says this moment could have been avoided. the senate has delayed a vote right now in their chamber because they are having conversations with their democratic colleagues in the house. again, if the bill presented is as house speaker kevin mccarthy described it, a short-term spending bill that i know cluds dis includes disaster aid but not ukraine spending aid, right now democrats are just trying to have a conversation about whether or not they need to keep fighting for that aid or whether or not they might be comfortable moving forward without

capitol in a failed plot to keep donald trump in power.arred hill is here in new york with more on all of this. jarred, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. according to our crews in the court, the judge called tarrio's case an outlier. even among the other january 6th cases, saying that he was at the top of the command structure that led to a violent attack on the capitol and the nation's principles. former proud boys leader, enrique tarrio was slapped with a 22 prison sentence on tuesday after his conviction on seditious conspiracy and other charges in the federal january 6th investigation. tarrio was not in washington that day, but prosecutors argue he was the primary organizer, leading the attack from a hotel in baltimore. a prior arrest banned him from traveling to d.c. >> he was the leader in recruiting and directing the organized violence when the mob attacked the capitol and tried to stop the transfer of power. >> reporter: tarrio's sentence was more lenient than the 33 years prosecutors wanted, but the judge did apply a terror

. >> we are live from capitol hill tonight.itadel of our democracy where democracy is not exactly working as it should be. the government is on the brink of shutting down tonight with house republicans voting in this hour on some of these stand-alone spending bills. the even if they can get these votes passed tonight and that is very much an open question as we are speaking right now, that alone would not prevent a government shutdown. a shutdown of course is not just a formality or something procedural but it would actually create a lot of pain for a lot of regular americans. tonight, house republicans are essentially at war with one another, not just over funding the government though. even with no agreement insight on funding, the government house republicans held their first hearing in the impeachment inquiry into president biden today. but it did not quite go as they expected or planned for it to go at least, as the hearing was deemed even by republican colleagues and unmitigated disaster many because of things like this.

that matches the longest sentence related to the 2021 capitol insurrection.lso sentenced today, dominic pezzola. you see him here on 6january smashing a window with a police shield before filming himself smoking a cigar inside the capitol building. he was given ten years for assaulting police and obstructing an official proceeding. earlier, my colleague sumi somaskanda spoke with cbs news correspondent williejames inman at the us capitol about pezzola's sentencing. pezzola was at the forefront of this entire situation when the events surrounding january 6th unfolded and the assault, including the assault on the us capitol. and as you mentioned, he essentially bashed that window, letting in the first batch of these rioters into the capitol complex and today, while he did have some of his family there to support him, pezzola essentially nearly in tears, telling the judge that he had given up politics. and after the judge spoke, the judge left the room, he then raised his fist and said, "trump won!" he yelled that in the courtroom there with his family members s
