it's a quieter day on capitol hill. first of all, where were you during all this and what are your recollections of this insanity on capitol hill today? >> i was walking down the hall immediately adjacent to the senate floor. one of the guards pulled me into the senate floor and said, senator, you need to come to the floor. we're going to lock down. there were shots fired. i went to the floor until it was safe to move about. i think my impressions as a former prosecutor, i'm very much in awe of the professional job our police did yesterday. there was no loss of life, other than the person who caused this very dangerous situation. the child is fine. our police officers have all survived. in the long run we really were inconvenienced for a relatively short period of time considering how reckless and dangerous obviously this mentally ill person was. >> there are questions being raised by some, and we all admire the capitol police, about whether having been so close to her, and the pictures bear that out, with their guns dr

i got over as fast as i could from capitol hill. i probably made it with my producer who i was running with kimberly, in two minutes. when we got to dirkson, everything was completely shut down. the pa announcement to shelter in place was echoing through these long alley ways between the buildings. at one point an officer when i tried to get closer to the police tape, about 50 yards from the first police tape that went up, an officer ran toward me with a big gun and said i was not safe being where i was. there was a small handful of other people at appointments at the the senate office building. we all kind of moved behind a corner of the building. it's important you hear everybody talking about the heroic work of capitol hill police here now securing the scene. you can see they're looking at evidence markers. none of these officers including those that engaged the suspect are being paid now because of the government shutdown. >> the security is intense around the capitol and white house. people will ask why didn't they shoot out th

when that incident started and as she made her way down to capitol hill, they did put the hill on lockdownin the house and the senate were given a shelter in place order, which meant that they had to move to the interior portions of their offices or seek shelter in an area that was not exposed to outside windows and outside doors. that was lifted shortly after police engaged with the suspect. now, we heard from u.s. capitol hill police spokesman chris dines that he did not know the status of the suspect. however, the sergeant at arms said to nbc news pete williams and luke russert that the suspect had been shot and killed. so we're looking forward to more clarification of that particular part of the story from chief dynes when he comes to the microphone. the woman reportedly had a child in the car. that's what luke russert is reporting. that was confirmed by chief dynes. however, we don't know the status of the child. we don't know the age of the child. by status i mean medical status of the child. police say they have stabilized the incident at this point. the lockdown was lifted at 3:30

here, first at the white house, then on capitol hill where she tried to run down a barricade where she eventually was shot and killed in a confrontation here on the capitol. earlier, i talked to some witnesses who were right here and this is what they heard, this is what they saw. >> seen these cop cars coming. there's probably five or six cop cars. they were chasing a little black car. at first, i thought it was a motorcade. it wasn't. when you see they were chasing that car, he tried to pull up on the sidewalk of the capitol. the barricades kept him out. the police cars boxed him in. >> they started hitting each side of his car. then we kind of looking at it going wow, i can't believe this is happening. next thing you know, the shooting started. once the shooting started, i got behind a tree and he got on the ground. >> reporter: again, we are told the suspect, a woman in that car is dead. we are told she was born in 1979, which would make her about 34 years old. we are told the car she was driving has connecticut license plates on it. we were told there was a young child in the car,

capitol police managed to stop the car at the foot of capitol hill, but officials say the driver then backed up and sped away as the officers opened fire. the driver continued speeding on the streets near the capitol. moments later the car crashed outside a senate office building. police again fired shots. >> it was like a series of maybe five or six. then a pause. then a few more. that was it. >> i hear boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom as, you know, the gun fire is unloading. >> reporter: she was later pronounced dead. a capitol policeman was injured when his car hit a barrier in the chaos of the chase. an infant was in the woman's car but was not seriously injured. police are searching a home in connecticut they believe is connected to the woman. members of the bomb squad are involved as well. investigators are searching her car and interviewing anyone who knew her looking for a motive. tonight several law enforcement and congressional officials say the woman they identify as 34-year-old miriam kerry had a history of mental issues. they are now working to determine why she w

picture at a very busy intersection with police activity, authorities say gunshots were fired on capitol hill leading to a lock- down. now we have just heard that fox news is reporting that lock- down is no longer in place according to capitol police. it has been lifted. there are reports that one officer was injured after the gunshots were reported, at the u.s. capitol according to capitol police and there is another senate leader saying there are reports of injuries plural but at this point we have only gotten word from capitol police of one officer who has been injured, a warning was sounded inside the capitol, the house went into recess, lawmakers left the chamber floor, they were told to shelter in place in their offices. people inside the building could not get out, people outside could not get in. the house by the way had just finished approving legislation aimed at partly lifting the government shut down by paying national guard and reserve members. people standing outside the supreme court across the street from congress were hurried into the building by authorities and the white hou
