we will be talking about it all next week on capitol hill. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell plans to proceed to debate on that budget resolution beginning next week in the house is also expected to take it up. sally writes that the budget plans are her top issue of the week. a headline on that on the opinion page of "washington post." this by robert kagan today. "republicans need to back up their prodefense top with funding." noting that president obama is proposing an increase in the budget, $38 billion above the sequester, robert kagan writes that "the editorial writers and columnists beating up obama and cheering republicans need to tell republicans and their own leaders that national security costs money and letters and speeches are worse than meaningless without it. those calling for a tougher approach as they run for president need to say loudly and frequently while traveling to iowa and new hampshire and florida that a central plank of their candidacy and a central goal of the presidency is breaking sequester and increasing spend

nearly a thousand nutritionists will lobby on capitol hill today. tracie potts joins us from capitol hill with more on this. >> good morning. they want more money and more options. the usda said schools have to spend $1.2 billion more this year to meet the new standards and a lot of those schools, according to the school nutrition association, are either losing money more than half of them or about a fifth just breaking even. they're here to ask congress for 35 cents per meal more to help cover that shortfall. they're also asking for more flexibility on things like salt. they don't want to see the levels reduced anymore because many schools say they're having a hard time finding foods items that meet the standards that don't have so much sodium. they also say they're losing money because kids are throwing out the fruits and vegetables they're now required to get. they're required to pick them up. they're not required to eat them. one university study found that waste is up 100%. $684 million worth of fruits and vegetables being thrown out by kids wh

there is a lot of noise on capitol hill today.transportation people, we tend to think that we are unique and special. like, we are transportation. we have a trust fund. this is all good. except that, in the last 10 years or so, it has not been quite all that good. now, you go to capitol hill -- you know, it to the senate six weeks to pass a department of homeland security bill just in the house. just an appropriations bill. nothing complicated. just an appropriations bill for the department of homeland security. the senate spent three weeks debating the keystone pipeline. we have kind of done that one before. we have been there, done the keystone thing before. the president vetoed it here it took three weeks to do that. they have a debt ceiling debate to come up. they need to pass the budget between now and may 31. in june, the export bank, the import bank will expire again. we have a medicare problem coming up. there is a lot of noise in capitol hill. you being here cut through that noise. you are a person from the district, from

scott thuman is live in the capitol hill bureau. what's latest scott? scott: leon secretary of state john kerry was overseas today in switzerland dealing with his iranian counterparts. it's been about five hours talking but the administration isn't just trying to strike a deal with iran. it's also trying to avert what could be a dicey showdown with congress. if they feel like the whole world is watching they're right. and the stakes can't get much higher. the administration claims progress in halting iran's nuclear ambitions but it may be losing support on the hill and not just from republicans who told tehran a deal could disappear after president obama leaves office. president obama: their basic argument is don't deal with our president as close to unprecedented. reporter: a worried white house sent them a bill to give them the power to make aan greement. it would see iran freeze the nuclear program for a decade and the u.s. scale back sanctions that have crippled the economy. critics call it a dangerous move. >> president obama will effectively take

secret service director was on capitol hill yesterday to again talk about his agency's budget but allawmakers wanted to talk about, the latest scandal involving the secret service. senators pressed the secret service director on whether his agency erased surveillance tapes. he acknowledged there is at least one missing camera angle. >> that camera angle we do not have an we're going to go back and hopefully be able to capture. several lawmakers complained there are only tapes of when two agents drove onto the white house grounds after entringing and interrupting a bomb investigation. >> that tape should be preserved. >> the supervisor allegedly allowed the agents to go home without a breathalyzer. the director was not told of the incident for five days. he said he understands all the suspicious. >> we don't have a system where someone can erase tapes but they are at 72 hours taped over. and i know that's a concern. >> at this intersection where the incident occurred there are at least ten cameras that are visible to the naked eye. it's not clear if they're all operated by the secret s
