what we're told by law enforcement officials is there was a male suspect who was shot by capitol hill police right at the entrance to the visitors center. that's right over my left shoulder, down east capitol street where those emergency response vehicles are right now. still a lot of law enforcement gathered down there. that is where the incident occurred. we're told a male suspect shot and wounded, that suspect taken to the hospital. we're told that a female bystander was wounded by shrapnel in the incident. no word on her condition. we're told there are no other suspects at large, so this incident appears to have wound down, jake. one male in custody but wounded and a female bystander wounded by shrapnel. in other suspects at large right now. police officers just swarmed to the scene when we got word there had been a shooting near the entrance to the visitors center, which again is just down here, and the capitol was on lockdown for about an hour. i talked to a woman who was there taking a tour with her grandson. she said they were in the rotunda area finishing up their tour. she d

not a lot of activity in a normal day here on capitol hill. tell you this is the kind of thing that seems to happen here at the u.s. capitol complex every couple of years. we have an incident like this. we had one back in the mid-1990s when an intruder shot his way through a security checkpoint, and couple of years ago you remember the bizarre incident where a woman rammed a gate at the white house then drove to the west front of the capitol complex and was shot by officers there. so the officers here are expecting this at any moment. they train for this on a regular basis and know how to handle these situations, it may be we'll get more information about what exactly happened here as soon as we get that press conference. >> eamon, i know you spoke with witnesses a few moments ago, were they able to see the shooter or tell you anything? >> reporter: they did not see the shooter. they described a very scary but orderly situation waiting to go through the checkpoint. the cops are saying active shooter on the north side was what the police told t

ska scott macfarlane is on capitol hill with more on the suspect. scott? >> reporter: his name is larry russell dawson, 67 years old, and he's known to u.s. capitol police. he's from antioch, tennessee. in fact, a vehicle outside the capitol grounds with tennessee markings still being investigated by police. we have some images of that. why is he known to capitol police? dawson was arrested last fall for proceeding. in fact, he was in the chamber and police say he shoved or assaulted a capitol police officer after she tried to stop him. d.c. superior court judge issued a stay away order to dawson that included the entirety of the u.s. capitol grounds, the library of congress, the house and senate office buildings, the capitol and the visitor center. larry dawson is suspected of having what they call a pellet gun on him today, and if so, at least 12 times since 2012 somebody carried a gun or something that appeared to be a gun on capitol grounds. the shot that was fired by u.s. cop toll police, injured dawson. the second time gunfire has occurred since last
