>> issue of gun control, the issue of expanded background checks have been a struggle on capitol hillny, many years. a lot of experts say public opinion moves at a much faster clip than the issue of guns on capitol hill. a lot of that is due to the makeup of the senate. we had the tragic shootings in newtown, connecticut, in 2012 at the sandy hook elementary school. remember, a couple months later, there was a debate on the senate in background checks. it was actually controlled by democrats. and extended background checks still failed to advance in the senate because you had several democrats who come from these red states, these rural states, where a lot of their voters were gun activists and gun rights are important to them. while a broad -- as you point out, a broad majority, a wave of majority do support extended background checks, but the people who support second amendment rights are very passionate. they go out and vote. they call their representatives in congress and say do not support any sort of measure that restricts our gun rights. that's one reason why it's been so diffi

we just got into there the numbers at how dramatically the situation on capitol hill has changed just this week in terms of an outright majority now saying they want some type of impeachment action. you have been tracking closely how this is being received inside the white house. i'm curious about the conversations you're having there with folks around the president. is there a sense on their part that impeachment is now something that's inevitable? >> well, steve, it's increasing looking inevitable, and that seems to be changing by the hour here in washington. the public comments out of the white house are that this could play to the president's political advantage. but when you talk to the president's advisers, current and former, in a more private conversation, they're much more candid and reveal that there is some concern here. there's anxiety here. there's a feeling that president trump for months has been preparing for impeachment. he's almost in some ways been goading nancy pelosi to take this step. but now that she has taken this step, this is a very uncomfortable and troublin
