capitol police are now assisting the san francisco police department into the investigation into which the sale at broke into the back of the house. speaker pelosi was not there at the time. she was in washington, d.c. but the big focus this morning has been motivation and we are getting all these indications this was perhaps the worst possible motivation. it was somebody looking to do harm to the speaker of the house. now, the pelosi house is well known in san francisco. it has been the site of previous protests, last july, 2020 there was a protest outside that home and also, on news day, 2021 offensive graffiti was daubed on the garage. this attact paul pelosi has been condemned on all side of the political divide, the senate minority leader mitch mcconnell said he was horrified an disgusted, senator ted cruz republican said violence is always wrong and unacceptable. president biden in a statement from the white house saying he is praying for paul pelosi and speaker pelosi's family the president apparently called speaker pelosi to express his support after the white house termed a ho

capitol police, all going in and out at this time. we heard a brief press announcement from the san francisco police department about 30 minutes ago, but they would not speak to motive. they only described the sort of bare bones of it, and they released the name of the suspect here. other than that, we do not have a clear sense of it, other than the very fine reporting of our colleagues who have looked into it and who seem to have found that this was a targeted attack, or at the very least, that the assailant did shout the speak's first name, as you mentioned. so at this hour, we're waiting for more sense of who that suspect was, what the motivations may have been but i will also point out this is the pacific heights center of san francisco, an affluent neighborhood, and when there is suspicious activity on the corner, they call the police right away, this kind of activity very unusual in this part of san francisco and makes it all the way unusual and all the more horrifying. >> it is certainly horrifying. so ryan, nancy pelosi was not

and there are about 1,800 members of the united states capitol police. those officers are the ones responsible for protecting the capitol complex and also for the individual member security. there are, within that department, only about 200 special agents who are assigned to the dignitary protection details. only leadership members, like nancy pelosi, receive a full-time detail, which consists of about four to eight special agents. and any other member seeking protective details have to apply and it's dealt out on a case-by-case basis. in contrast, just so you understand, the secret service employs about 3,200 special agents. in addition to that, they have 1,300 uniform division officers. you are talking more than 4,000 members who are charged with protecting the white house and the president, vice president, and also visiting dignitaries. they receive on average 3,000 threats per year. so you can see the difference there in resources available. >> yeah. there is a big difference there. which leads me to my next question. the pelosi home has seen plenty

capitol police chief terry gainer. walk us through the federal charges. how prosecutors will use some of the disturbing details in the complaint as they build their case. >> yeah. so there are two different federal charges here. there is assault and then attempted kidnapping of an immediate family member of a federal official. those are punishable by maximum of 30 and 20 years respectively. what makes these charges federal is that the motive goes to the work, the official work of the federal official. and if you look at the evidence here, doj lays out in the complaint an overwhelming case that motivation for this attack was nancy pelosi, was her political position, and was her political stance on the issues. it's important to note, i want to make this point, it is perfectly okay legal, constitutional in our system to have both federal charges and state charges relating to the same conduct. i think we'll see that here. that is not double jeopardy. we're going to see this individual being prosecuted. both federally and in the state. you heard prosecutors wr

united states capitol police chief does not have a vote on a capitol police force, you have a lot of bureaucratic machinations you have to go through. there are individuals like -- bowser worried about the national guard and individuals who are going to worry about the optics of the national guard. you have a lot of people worried about what that would look like if you had a militarized presence before january sixth rally. on the other hand, we had intelligence breakdowns where you do not have individuals who know what that intelligence looks like. i think there would have been a different posture if he didn't have some of the intelligence and communications challenges that you had on that day. furthermore, when you look at nancy pelosi even if you think, well, she should have done better on the intelligence and communications front on that day, she appointed him to do a report of what happened that day. there was a disarray. i think people need to read that report. i think -- when you look at the data, it is not automatically like nancy pelosi didn't do something with the national g

i'll ask about capitol police later, but do you know if local authorities, or do you believe that theyhould take a different posture around the pelosi's home when the speaker is not there considering what happened on friday? >> first, victor, i'm just sickened and disgusted by what happened. i've been in the pelosi's homes many times. they have opened it up to their community so often. it's just heart breaking that they're going through this. and, yes, i assumed that there was 24/7 security around the speaker of the house's residence. that should be the default going forward. i'm frankly surprised there wasn't that security. >> so, beyond the speaker, beyond house and senate leadership, we know that capitol police resources are strained right now and have really been for some time. but for those members who are not in leadership, for their families that are facing threats, we heard from congressman kinzinger on the january 6th committee, that his family was threatened. he went to capitol police essentially they told him to get in line if he wanted protection for his family. what should

in fact, in the last six years, capitol police said they have taken an increase of tenfold threats coming are keeping track of. and so while i think everyone on capitol hill today is absolutely appalled, i think you would be pressed to find people who are truly surprised that something like this could happen to a member of congress or theirfamily. how is this up tick in threats of aggression and violence being dealt with? are members of staff being offered increased police protection? one of the difficulties, one of the dynamics that currently at play is that afterjanuary 6 and the attack on the capitol, capitol police had a tough time keeping police officers, keeping the number of staff that they needed in order to be able to process those threats. a spokesman for the capitol police, the agency in charge of keeping members of congress safe, say they have been able to hire a number of people that they need in order to process all these threats, but i will also add that many of these violent messages are being processed by 18, 19—year—old interns working on capitol hill who are answering t
