cara lui is live there right now and cara, are things finally back to normal? >> reporter: they sure are. traffic is flowing smoothly. we're high above the spot where the crash happened around 5:00. it wasn't until quarter after 10:00 until the crews got the car out of here. workers called for a traffic break to remove a mustang that managed to crash on the west sidewalk of the golden gate bridge. with the help of a reach fork, it took minutes to lift it up off the sidewalk and get it out of the way. how that car got there is something else. police say the driver went from the parking lot onto the sidewalk, heading southbound toward the bike lane on the bridge. officials say this driver was going so fast, he plowed right over this steel barrier and then went and plowed through another steel gate before going on the sidewalk. he drove about another 400 yards on the sidewalk. this picture shows where he finally got stuck, wedged between the sidewalk railing and median. >> i personally have never seen anything like this. this is pretty -- i would say very uncommon

let's bring in cara lui here who is helping us cover this bizarre incident. cara? >> reporter: well, sal, i just got off the phone with the golden gate bridge spokesperson. she tells me they've never seen anything like this before and this is certainly an accident that's going to take a long time to get cleared from this area. this doesn't appear to be affecting southbound traffic. what we've learned from the spokesperson, at about 5:30 this morning, there was a car speeding from the parking lot going way too fast for the conditions. it crashed through the concrete steel barrier as well as the steel gate going about 400 feet on the bridge before getting wedged on the sidewalk and the bike lane. now, the driver we're told was injured. he was taken to the hospital. the vehicle was a mustang. i don't believe you can see it from where we are being kept right now. but workers say they are waiting for daylight due to safety reasons before trying to tackle this. a caltrans worker tells us that he may need a crane to remove this car from this area. but again, this is all e
