joining me is heritage foundation national security and foreign policy vice president, james c carafano are up to 199 hostages we're told that hamas is holding in gaza and we're waiting for the ground offensive from israel into the gaza strip. how do you characterize what's happening right now? >> well, i don't have a lot of optimism for the hostages. we know it took months and years to plan the operation. it's very clear that hostage taking was intentionally part of the operation. which means that these were taken for maximum effect so this is more like a situation like the munich hostages. they've obviously -- they obviously have a plan with these people. they're not going to give them up easily. taking them by force is going to be incredibly difficult and they're going to want to hold onto them as long as they can so this is a really bad situation for them. the israelis' stated objective is to completely eliminate hamas' capacity for offensive operations. it's very, very difficult to see how they can do that without major military operations on the ground in the north. maria: do you
