what impact is this going to have on cardinal dolan? >> i think it will have zero impact on cardinal dolan's leadership within the conclave. because he is a known quantity. he is a known man of integrity. he is known as someone who can communicate the catholic faith positively. >> reporter: here in rome, another american cardinal, roger mahoney, the retired archbishop of los angeles, is under fire for his role in moving and shielding abusive priests. not a contender for the papacy, mahoney faces his own deposition tomorrow, after which he will come to the vatican to vote for the new pope. this week an italian cardinal told a local newspaper mahoney should stay home, and some american catholics agree. >> all cardinals should be held to the highest standard. anyone whose hands are tainted should refrain from voting. >> reporter: cardinals from ireland and belgium are also mired in scandal, but that's not likely to stop them from voting. the vatican says all cardinals under the age of 80 must vote, unless they are seriously ill or otherwis

the name that comes up, of course, is cardinal dolan here in new york. he is someone who has only been cardinal for less than a year. that would obviously argue against it. when i was talking to a mutual friend, his analysis was maybe the best chance for an american pope that we have ever seen, and yet the canses of that are minuscule. what's your assessment? >> i wouldn't say minuscule, but i would say it's a long shot. i think we might have ra north american pope. i think cardinal willette from canada will get a serious look. i wouldn't be prepared to do any odds-making right now. i think it's clear the cardinals will want a younger man, to give a good 10 to 15 years of service. >> i think a lot of people wondered whether or not this pope would have been in the seat as long as he has been. thank you so much. it is good to see you, and i'm sure we'll by talking against in the coming days, george. >> i suspect i'll see you in rome. >> when are you going? >> soon, i imagine. >> we'll see you there then. >>> i want to bring? senator john bur ratso. there's

cardinal timothy dolan of new york spoke with diane sawyer earlier and reflected on the toll of it all. >> when he speaks about the church, when he speaks about christian life they are the most noble, loving, the most elevated sentiments you can have. and for him to see the troubles, the corruption, the scandals that have always afflicted members of the church, that's got to weigh on him. >> reporter: another scandal hit close to home. his own personal but tear stole a trove of his private correspondence and leaked it to the italian media. over the years, many of the faithful warmed to this meek, prayerful man. >> he was an incredible shepherd and just someone i would look to as one of the great leaders in our church. >> reporter: and now he is leaving to lead a quiet life in the vatican. so what next? is this a moment when the church is on the verge of profound change? a lot of people in the secular world look at the catholic church and say when are they going to ordain women and have priests who don't have to be celibate? when are they going to change on the issue of homosexuality? >

cardinal timothy dolan. in an interview cardinal dolan reflected on what kind of man will emerge as pope. >> all the other things where they're from languages they know leadership skills managerial competency, that's gravy, isn't it? but, boy, you better look for somebody who reminds us of jesus, which in a way, allen, is another word for you are looking for a holy man. >> reporter: benedict was widely seen as a great teacher and a less-than-efficient manager of the vast church bureaucracy. >> is not the big problem the next pope will face is cleaning up the church? >> sadly, sadly, sadly, sadly, we leaders of the church and that's why we say mea culpa through my fault all the time sadly, tragically we leaders of the church have often given people reasons not to have trust in the church anymore. >> reporter: a major reason why is the sex abuse scandal which several of the cardinals, dolan included, have been accused of trying to cover up. so will it feature in the conclave deliberations? >> it should certain

he's been well aware of his own, the fragility of his health for a while. >> cardinal dolan continues to amaze me as how reasoned he sounds and how remarkable he pulls all the factors together. >> there are some 117, i think it is, cardinals under the age of 80 who will vote in the new conclave, but only 11 of them are american. that's why people say cardinal dolan maybe doesn't have a shot at becoming the next pope unless he garnered international support. >> it would be interesting to watch. earlier, we spoke with the dean of georgetown college and theology professor at georgetown university. he is an expert on catholicism and on pope benedict. is it possible they will look to a younger pope because of this? >> yes, anything is possible. i think he was elected at a fairly advanced age, and people thought it would be a short papacy. i predicted at the time it would be at least ten years. it's close. when you choose a younger pope however, you have to remember it is a lifetime appointment. so if you pick someone who's 50 with our longevity, you could have a pope for the next 40 or 45

>> well, i think one of the things if you look at the cardinals, especially cardinal dolan just a minute ago, you see catholics have a great many of wonderful cardinals who would step into that role and would serve, very, very well. i think they will look for somebody who will continue the intellectual, the pass storm mission of john paul the 2nd and benedict the 16th. who will be in alignment with them and their cardinals from europe, north america, latin america and africa that can do that very well. jenna: like all popes, really in the position of great power. there is also criticism that sometimes is levied upon someone with such a responsibility. i'm just curious when you reflect back over these last several years with pope benedict, what do you think is important when you look ahead to who is chosen for the next pope but not only for the leadership of the church but a religious leader, a spiritual leader for the world? >> i think one of the great challenges is reconciliation among people of different faiths of integrity, of spirituality, of purifying the church. this has been a gre
