cardinal jorge mario bergoglio, a jesuit from argentina, has been elected the 266th pope. in his brief address from the balcony of st. peter's basilica, the new pope asked for the crowd's blessing. many say this papacy heralds an era of change in the catholic church. cardinal bergoglio succeeds benedict xvith, who was the first pope to retire in 600 years. pope francis is the first to take the name francis and he's the first pope in the history of the church to be chosen from the global south. joining me now father joseph mcshane. he is the president of fordham university. father walter modrys, he was pastor of st. ignatius loyola patience in new york city for 19 years. john degioia, he is the president of georgetown university and in nashville, jon meacham. he is the author of "thomas jefferson: the art of power. that is the other 114 cardinals in the sistine chapel who elected cardinal jorge mario bergoglio as pope francis want someone who is going to shake up entrenched ways of doing business in the vatican and when they talk about refothey're not tlki about secular model of reform meaning changes to church teaching on matters such as abortion or birth control. instead they're talking about changes in business management in the vatican towards making the bureaucracy here more transparent, that is both internally and externally, making it clearer who's making decisions and why and also doing a better job communicating with the outside world towards making it more accountable. that is the idea that there ought to be penalties for poor performance and towards making it efficient. the notion being is at the thkingn centuries may have cut it once upon a while but in a 21st century world it simply doesn't do it anymore. that's what these cardinals mean by reform and they have embraced pope francis tasman who can deliver it. whether it plays out in practice that way, of course, remains to be seen. >>

keep one eye on cardinal jorge mario bergoglio as a compromise candidate. very good jesuit. what do you mean by jesuit? >> my reasoning was this. there were three candidates put out as thefront-runners. you had sherer from brazil, you had scola. after three ballots came up negative, i assumed they were going to look to somebody else. the reason why bergoglio was not getting a lot of traction was because he was 76. the assumption was we need somebody younger. i knew from listening other cardinals talk was they didn't care so much about the age. they wanted someone who could fix the dysfunction in the vatican. he's an outsider, extreme simplicity. they thought he could get the job done. >>brian: i heard ten days before the conclave started, that's when he began to impress some of the other cardinals. by the way, that's the first time you quoted tom petty in a very long time. >>alisyn: in a very, very long time. >> i didn't even know he said it quite honestly. >>brian: what exactly did he do to win everybody over, have you heard? >> i saw what he did. it was an amazing thing, b
