cardona: thank you. i came from the local district level. i was fortunate to serve as commissioner of education in connecticut. decisions are made there with local control. with input of local stakeholders and the community there. that is where it should stay. the education department does not mandate curriculum. nor does it lean one way or another. what it does do is provides promoters for grants to be submitted. >> whoever is unmuted, please mute so we can hear the testimony. ? i'm going to be quick because i can see the time is ticking. it is critically important our educators have a voice in developing curriculum. we know curriculum can serve as a window and mirror and sliding door into their own experiences and other -- curriculum does a lot more. what it does is it engages students and students should always see themselves in curriculum. i welcome seeing states come up with creative ideas on how to have students be seen in their curriculum but in a matter that -- in a manner that builds community.

sec: cardona: yes. accountability needs to be applied and we need to make sure students are getting a return on their investment but we have to make sure we are meeting the demand out there and the needs of our learners, yes i support it. i am getting more perspective and making sure we are serving students the best we can. >> one last question, early exposure to these programs have been shown to promote career readiness. you mention ideas about programs at the high school level or earlier, what can we be doing to support students as early as possible? not every student is going to take that opportunity but it gives an option if they decide to do it. how else can we be reporting workforce development efforts as early as possible? sec: cardona: student engagement. students learn better if they engage with things in our hands on. students have to be in a schoolhouse. maybe students go on trips and see what is happening in their community, advanced manufacturing and what that looks like, or what -- we have

attorneys general from 20 states sent a letter to the education secretary miguel cardona asking him toosal that would prioritize the 1619 project and critical race theory for federal grant program. this push was led by the indiana a.g., but i want to put up a list of all of the state attorneys general who signed this letter. you're looking at everybody. what is your reaction to that? are you surprised that so many a.g.s signed on to this letter? >> i'm never surprised by how entrenched a culture of white supremacy is, especially in departments of justice and i'm never surprised by how many people want to protect the myth of american exceptionalism and perfection. we can say this is an obsession with nicole hannah-jones and she represents our best and brightest and the commitment to truth telling. she stands in the legacy of wells and most certainly a black woman like that who is doing the kind of work that she is, is a threat to the status quo, but even beyond nikole, she would tell you that this is par for the course. i had nikole on my podcast on undistracted and i asked her this que
