colin powell died today at the age of 84. in addition to being secretary of state in the george w. bush administration, he had a long military career and was chair of the joint chiefs of staff from 1989 to 1993. current defense secretary lloyd austin tweeted this morning, it will be impossible to replace general colin powell. he was a tremendous personal friend and mentor to me, and there is a hole in my heart right now as i think about his loss. my thoughts and prayers today or with his family, and i want them to know i will miss him dearly. later, during an overseas trip, secretary austin talked about the passing of colin powell.
