julie carey is live with an update. jew julie?> reporter: this jury deliberating nine hours now and gave the judge their latest update. they told the judge they need another 30 to 60 minutes to deliberate. they told the jim, for now, they are declining dinner that could mean one of two things. it could mean that they are closing in on their verdict and expect to have it soon or it could mean they are getting weary and when they report banks backe to the judge the next time, they may say they want to call it quits for the night. the jim talked to the prosecution and the defense team in the courtroom and asked them, hypothetically, if the jury does reach a verdict in the next 30 to 60 minutes works they be willing to begin the sentencing hearing tonight. in virginia, once a verdict is render, then the jury starts to hear witnesses in the sentencing hearing and later comes back for a decision on that. so the attorneys said they would be willing to start that process tonight. the judge said the latest he is willing to go with any of t

julie carey is in charlottesville, virginia, with more. >> reporter: for the first time in this trial jurors saw photos of yeardley love's bruised and lifeless body and also heard from about a dozen friends and teammates of the two who testified about the couple's increasingly stormy relationship. on the witness stand today, the former university of north carolina lacrosse player who interrupted an incident between accused killer george huguely and yeardley love two months before her death. it was february 27th when michael persons was visiting. he testified i heard a girl yelling saying help me, help me. he went toward the sound opened hughley's bedroom door and found hughley with a choke hold on yeardley love. he put david chapman in the position. i saw george with his arm around yardley's neck and they were both on the bed. yeardley was on her back on top of him. love then fled. the only thing she said to me when she got out of there was thanks so much and she couldn't breathe. defense attorneys sought to down play the incident asking about a phone call to check on love. asked fran

julie carey joins us with details. >> reporter: when jurors were chosen, they were warned they would have to view graphic and disturbing photos. some of those pictures were shown today, key pieces of prosecution evidence. it was a dramatic moment in court. for the first time prosecutors showed jurors photographs of a dead yeardley love, her body on the floor of her bedroom. emts still working on her, her eye bruised and swollen shut. as michael when shaw described the lifesaving efforts, her mother and sister broke into tears. george huguely looked down as he sat at the defense table. a few jurors initially looked away. when shaw was among a series of first responders called to testify. said when shaw, i made a comment of the fact that she had a very large bruise on her face. so the officer leaned over and took a picture. charlottesville detective sean bails rushed to the scene when he learned cpr was being called. the 911 call suggested alcohol poison. he testified, when i arrived, one of the things that drew my attention was a huge hole in the bedroom door. prosecutors say a drunk,

julie carey is live in charlottesville with more. jewelly? >> reporter: yeardley love's mother around sister wiped away tears today as the defense tried to suggest that a type of asphyxia killed the victim and not their client, george huguely. but the prosecution says this is a case of first-degree murder and they highlighted an e-mail threat from huguely to back that up. with leg shackles limiting his walk, accused killer george huguely arrived at court, a blank expression on his face, both outside and inside the courtroom. but there were tears on the witness stand when victim yeardley love's sister, lexie you and mother, sharon, both testified about the terrible morning of may 3, 2010, when they learned yeardley was dead. her on again, off again boyfriend george huguely was arrested that day accused of breaking into love's bedroom in a drunken rage and shaking her violently, hitting her head against the wall. the roommate and fellow lacrosse player who found her dead, katie whitely, testified that huguely and love's relationship had grown i

julie carey is in charlottesville with more. >> dr.illiam gormley is the assistant chief at the state crime lab and today showed jurors the many injuries on yardley love's battered body. injuries the prosecution hopes to show came at the hands of george huguely. the autopsy of 22-year-old yardley love revealed bruises that stretched nearly from head to toe. dr. william gormley testified they were even on her chest, a bruise on her buttock measuring 2 x 3 inches. on her neck a bruise so severe it caused a hemorrhage near her carotid artery. as prosecutor david chapman about the neck injury what is the effect of pressure being applied here? dr. gormley the effect is for the heart to slow or stop. chapman, could that type of injury lead to death? gormley, it could reflect pressure that could have led to death. love's head injuries were also significant. she had a bruised eye, mouth abrasions, cuts inside her mouth, and a bruised tongue. when asked what could have caused that gormley replied, the injury to the face particularly the mouth c

news4's julie carey join us from the courthouse with the next important face of the trial. jewelly? >> reporter: the prosecution finished its case today by calling five of george humely's lacrosse team nights the stand. some of them had been pal bearers at yeardley love's funeral and one of them in material remembers confronting george huguely in the early morning hours of may 3rd about a change in his demeanor, that was the time period just after the alleged attack on yeardley love. the prosecution ended its case with a piece of evidence it wants the jury to remember, a photo of a dead yeardley love, her eye darkened by a large bruise. prosecutors also returned to the hours before the 22-year-old's death, calling five of george humely's lacrosse teammates to testify about his behavior on may 2nd and 3rd, 2010. their star witness, teammate ken clausen, who described yeardley love as one of his best friends at uva. clausen and the others said huguely began that sunday drunk and got increasingly intoxicated throughout the day. clausen says he was with huguely's room mate, kevin carrol
