with us now, carl bernstein, it is always good to have you with us. tim, let's talk about the historical first here, former president trump acquitted for the first time. what do you see the significance of this outcome? >> oh, this is is the first time america's president has been impeached and the first time the leader of the president's party has agreed that the president was guilty of the charges driven by the house managers. this is the first time that a former president have been tried. what is really disturbing about today is not that they did not reached 67. no one expected to be 67 votes to convict. it was not a great surprise that even republicans joined. we were so dismayed that minority leader mcconnell admits that donald trump was practically and morally responsible for the insurrection and yet he found a reason not to vote to convict. this is a man who found in the constitution the right to ignore a presidential nominee of the supreme court. a man who found time -- knowing that donald trump was guilty, he still could not find it in his co

let's bring in carl bernstein because he lived it before. people always draw the comparison, carl.you were there. you are here. what's the feel in contrast? >> this is unprecedented. this is a seditious president of the united states who has undermined the very basis of our democracy, who does not care about loss of life. it's the same president who is negligent in homicidal terms because of his handling of the covid situation and not handling that in a way that would save american lives. but let's talk about one other thing. did this event we witnessed today in these horrible videos is about the presence of evil. and the evil here is an evil president of the united states. yes, it's an open and shut case in terms of the incitement. but there's a moral dimension to this. you know i've covered the courts. you're a lawyer. and in cases of violence, juries take into consideration in their minds the presence of evil. and that's really part of what the republican party here seems to refuse to consider, that evil has come to be the agenda of a president, and they have gone along with it.
