carl cameron is live in washington with more on this. hey carl. >> reporter: this happens every four years, this time, it's no exception, the first caucus vote, the iowa first of the nation caucus is expected to be exactly 24 weeks from today, six months from now. unless the actual dates change. the rnc2 years ago came up with rules for this year's calendar and as it stands right now, iowa would vote on february 6th. that would be the first of the votes in the 2012 cycle, followed by new hampshire's first in the nation primary, which would fall february 14th, the nevada caucus would take place on the eighth and carolina's first in south primary would take place february 28th. the problem with that is from two states: arizona and florida are making a lot of noise about pushing ahead and trying to get an earlier birth in the process, entering not only to gain their influence but also affect the race as best they can. and if they were though do so they would lose half of their nominating delegates and yet still go ahead. arizona could move i

chief political correspondent carl cameron is live in washington with more and, carl, we hear governorichelle bachmann are competing in south carolina. >> reporter: yes, they are both there today and the south primary where rick perry hopes to capitalize on being a southern governor, and a veteran, south carolina has the highest per capita population of military and, the christian vote, is half the vote and they call themselves self-described evangelicals and he figures he has a good base of support to start with and michelle bachmann is going after the same people, however, and, this morning, mr. perry was campaigning, he seems to be a lot more at ease, and, michelle bachmann arrived in south carolina last night. big crowds and big response. and, this morning, perry hit the palmetto state campaign trail and had a big crowd and seemed more enthusiastic going after the southern vote than he was in new hampshire where he got mixed reviews in addition to the protests. and, so this morning he was playing up the conservative unity of the g.o.p. message, heading into the 2012 elections. list

carl cameron is live in washington and what are they saying, carl. >> reporter: hi, bill, up until att romney was holding back, because he had yet to take a position on what will be voted on. but, mitt romney now, for the first time in weeks allowed himself to take a position exactly on the bill, and, he's not in favor of it. and, a statement a few minutes ago, he said his plan would have produced a budget that was cut, cap and balance, a reference to the original proposals, now modified and not one that opens the door to higher taxes and puts defense cuts on the table and while he appreciates the extraordinarily difficult situation the president's lack of leadership placed the members of congress in, he cannot support the deal and that is a big change where he tried to avoid getting pinned down as the offers kept changing and puts him in line, with michelle bachmann, the stalwart opponent as the chairperson of the house tea party caucus, she has said from the beginning she would not be able to support an increase in the debt limit and didn't want to bror me and when the president an

chief political correspondent carl cameron live from ames, the leading candidates, who are considereds carl? >> there's two and one is national and one is in iowa, really. mitt romney is considered the national frontrunner, he's leading the polls by more than half a dozen points, well outside the margin in most of the polls, high teens or low 20s and he has a great deal riding on this. he hasn't been campaigning particularly aggressively in iowa and plans to ramp that up. in fact a short while ago he was down at the state fair in demoines where he was accosted by democratic activists, arguing with him about social security, and mr. romney had to raise his voice in order to get over the din of what appeared to have been hecklerlers according to folks who saw it. the iowa frontrunner is michelle bachmann, from minnesota next door, the chairman of the house tea party caucus. she has been dominating the buzz here, drawing huge crowds with a great deal of enthusiasm, so both of them have a great deal riding on tonight's debate, mitt romney will face his share of criticism from the rest of

carl cameron joins us live from ames. pundits say this is the most important week thus far. are the candidates to watch? >> it's not just the pundits actually. the candidates themselves say this is probably the most important and potentially con sequential week thus far because that sets the debate for the straw poll and it could be the end of some of the campaigns. it's entirely the likely the field will get winnowed. perhaps mob has more riding than michelle bachmann, the congresswoman, born in iowa, has had six weeks of big, big buzz, and the question is whether or not she can translate that into the boots on the ground to win the straw poll, anywhere between 50 and 20,000 -- 15 and 20,000 people can cast ballots. it's not so much about the calf iz ma as it is about getting peoples' attention in iowa, and in addition to bachmann, lots riding on this for tim pawlenty. perhaps no candidate has spent more time working aggressively and it's almost cliche so say that tim pawlenty has lots of boots on the ground but not a lot of buzz, the inverse of bachmann, and there's a lot
