chief political correspondent carl cameron is live in washington. ns nearly pulled off an upset in that race. did virginia democrats get a scare? >> reporter: oh, yeah. mcauliffe headquarters between 7:30 and quarter to 9:00 there was a lot of nervousness in terry mcauliffe's forces at that rally. virginia is a key swing state. both parties this morning are going over exit polls trying to figure out ways they can capitalize what worked and minimize things that maybe didn't work so well for either party. the gop's economic message of smaller government did work. 45% of virginia voters said the economy was their top priority and cuccinelli actually won those voters by 6%, calling for smaller government. the obamacare debacle was a very, very potent issue for the republicans. 25% of all virginia voters said health care was a major concern and cuccinelli carried them by 4% as an ardent foe of the affordable care act. what appears to have hurt cuccinelli was abortion and social conservative issues. 20% said abortion was a key factor, mcauliffe had whoppin

chief political correspondent carl cameron's live in washington. they're really nowhere near approval yet, but the obama administration really wants to change the rules that govern political fund raising and spending by these so-called social welfare groups that are known as 501c4s in the u.s. tax code. we're talking about super pacs, really, the kind that don't disclose their donors. an example would be americans for prosperity, the right. on the left, you've got groups like requireties usa which raises tens of billions of dollars and rub by former obama aides and staffers and is trying to divvy up duties in order to be more effective this year. all of this in the wake of the irs' admission that tea party and conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status during president obama's first term were deliberately targeted for greater scrutiny, delays and denials, much more so than any liberal groups. what the obama administration wants to do is no more registering voters, distributing voter guides or running blatantly political attack ads this the last

chief political correspondent carl cameron, who is no stranger to airline travel, and that is an understatementis doing double duty tonight at reagan national airport. good evening, carl. >> reporter: big surprise. another thanksgiving eve in an airport. thanks, doug. it's pretty quiet here in d.c. there have been some delays, but not particularly bad ones. up north it is a thanksgiving nightmare for an awful lot of travelers. the airports up there have been pounded by a storm that has been moving from the southwest up to the northeast this evening. by morning today, there were some 1600 flights that had already been canceled. and this has been a three-day storm that has been rolling cancellations and dropping a foot of snow all across the country. the airlines expected 2.8 million passengers across the country today. that's about a half million more than normal. so far 548 flights have been canceled. about 4700 have faced delays. the worst has been in philadelphia, newark, and la guardia. there have been problems in miami and atlanta. that's mostly as a consequence of the ripple effect. all in

carl cameron has details from washington. carl?porter: this was done by the non-partisan center for public integrity. it did a study and super pac races in virginia are telling. in the garden state republican governor chris christie was easily elected in pretty overwhelming landslide, turns out democrats and labor groups were going to win, they spent a record shattering $35 million on down garden races that the legislature would remain in democratic control. it was large amount of money done largely with special interest and super pac money. a single environmental super pac in virginia pent $8 million in three months of blistering attack ads funded almost entirely by long time democratic activist and billionaire donor time stier. he will have super pacs target specific races in 2014, governor, house, senate, et cetera. the left has demonized wealthy conservative donors and philanthropists buying inclunes with the big money. koch brothers and americans for prosperity are good examples. tom stier in california and outgoing new york m
