campaign carl cammeron as we like to call him is live in rockwell, iowa. it could hardly be more tense at this point. ron paul like virtually every other republic who has crested 20 points and challenged mitt romney for frontrunner status has for several days endured a pounding from his rivals. >> virtually one or the other has come forward and said he is out of the main step. he would not be able to compete against barack obama. mitt romney on the other hand is showing signs of big confidence. almost a little bit cocky with a spring in his step and his talking about winning in iowa and new hampshire and moving on to challenge president obama. and romney's aides say looking back at his 2008 second place showing they would go over all the counties that mitt romney won four years ago and they say he has pretty much got them sewn up now. puts him in good position. after tomorrow, the campaign sort of goes into suspended animation. we have a three day new year's eve holiday weekend. takes a lot of attention away from the caucus voters before tuesday. >> harris

first, let's go to carl cammeron live in ames, iowa. mitt romney has to be feeling pretty good when you take a look at the poll numbers right now. >> clearly he takes a look at the crowds that he is attracting and feeling even better about it this morning at 8:00, on the friday before the new year's holiday weekend. mitt romney managed to draw a crowd of nearly a thousand people in a drizzle and 36-degree temperatures. that's a sign that's something going won mitt romney. i had an opportunity to talk with him right after that rally and while he was clearly confident, he refused to predict victory. just listen to this. >> i sure hope we do darn well in the iowa caucuses. got a long way to go. it's a long road. i have got to get 1150 delegates. it would be great to get a terrific sendoff in iowa. i think we will do well here. >> it's worth remembering that mitt romney did fairly well last time around. he came in second with 25% of the vote. much of that organization and support didn't go away in the last four years. in fact, he has been c

carl cammeron with the news live davenport, iowa tonight.han the obvious, what does this poll mean? >> well it, doesn't show a lot of growth for mitt romney and a really serious plummet for newt gingrich. it's obvious but it breaks thought a really interesting way. last week newt gingrich lost a half dozen points on his poll numbers. the week before that he lost a half dozen points on poll numbers. that's when the attack ads started on television. it is still very much a two person race nationally. with gingrich falling nationally. folks here in iowa where the first caucuses are 15 days away. they hear it. it makes them nervous and it makes it harder for them to no, nominate them or give them the caucus victory. here in iowa they say they care about retail politics and they want to find somebody they can get behind. the truth is they want somebody electable and gingrich is under fire for that. >> shepard: he sure is republic after republic under fire including peter king the republic of new york. all those votes for gingrich, where are they
