carla hayden serves as the librarian of congress.it was a lifetime appointment, so only 14 people have held the job since 1802. how does having storycorps here fit into your vision for the library of congress? >> dr. carla hayden: storycorps is an important part of adding history and context and the individuals who make history. not just the ones that we see on the news, but the people who are part of the fabric of our american life. the everyday people-- what did they feel, what do they believe? >> o'donnell: to try to find out, storycorps rolled out a mobile booth in 2005 to travel the country. they also launched partnerships and story collection programs in multiple american cities. >> isay: this is dave isay, founder of storycorps. >> o'donnell: when the pandemic hit, they created a new way for people to submit stories online. >> isay: share your interview far and wide, and know that someda, future generations will be listening. >> o'donnell: every friday, for the last 16 years, national public radio sends one story into the home

carla hayden. dr. hayden was sworn in in 2016 supported by senator blunt and myself. she is the first woman and the first african-american to lead the national library. previously she served as ceo of a library in baltimore and that was beginning in 1993, and in 2010 she was nominated by president obama and confirmed as a member of the national museum and library services board. earlier in her career, she held positions with the museum of science and industries in chicago, the university of pittsburgh and chicago public library. she received her undergraduate degree from roosevelt university and her masters of art and phd from the university of chicago where i went to law school. next, ms. perlmutter was appointed in october 2020. prior to her appointment, she served as chief policy officer and director for the international affairs at the u.s. patent and trade office. she previously held positions at the international federation of the photographic industry and that time warner. she received her undergraduate degree from harvard and her law degree from the university
