no carla johnson from the office of disability. -- we have carla johnson from the office of disability. i want to especially it acknowledge my colleague to help us get the resources and brought legal expertise to the table. i do not want to take too much of your time. thank you for coming. >> thank you, supervisor chu. i want to express my admiration for a supervisor chu's commitment to you. so, from our office, what we heard, many small businesses were receiving lawsuits regarding it the ada. tonight we will hear about the legal requirements, what has been in place. any small businesses that nderst informed as far as their obligations for the ada, there are the mechanisms to provide that information to you. so, we are tasked with providing the information. there have been about 300 small businesses that have received the lawsuits. knee individuals who use this mechanism and come up -- the individual to use this mechanism. while it is important to have ada access, but we want you to understand there are individuals out there taking a look at your vulnerability. we have a packet of info

we have had jim whetbone and carla johnson come in and make presentations and explain that facet of our office. mta clear channel bus shelters, adaptable dwelling units, as i've mentioned. the new ada, finally after 20 years, the 2010 ada courses, we have had (inaudible) going through the dimensions. san francisco's variety of systems for granting approval for temporary events which led to the office working on the temporary events policies with varied departments. the america's cup, it's people's transportation plan and as we talked about an outgrowth of that was the improvements on jefferson street and of course planning department parklets and i should not say this, but cycle tracks in jefferson. go, state park. so it's an impressive body of work. and we really appreciate you putting that public time

it's to mayor lee, carla johnson, john paul scott and cochairs wendy james and julianne parsons. i hereby resign as chair of the physical access committee, effective day. i have served as chair of the physical access committee for almost 5 years. sips i began using an electric wheelchair and even before then when i walked with great difficulty. i have seen great improvement in san francisco especially access to buildings, curb ramps into buildings and disaster preparedness. it has been a privilege and a source of pride to have helped move the ball forward on physical access as chair of this committee. however, when it comes to access for people with major mobility disabilities, san francisco is becoming a tale of two cities. in one city, the progress mentioned above is continuing but in the other city, san francisco's campaign against cars is threatening our safety, transportation options, mobility, independence and equality of opportunity. people with major mobility disabilities, many of whom are seniors, rely heavily on private cars, paratransit and shuttle services. the campai

moving on to the directors i am carla johnson, interim director. the last time we met there was an election. there is a lot to be thankful for in the outcomes of the election at the national state and local level. also on two local measurs. prop b, 195 million dollar general obligation bond measure earmarked to provide renovations and improvements to our city parks. one of the reasons why that is so important to us here in the council and also to the mdc, these renovations advance access in the facilities. this is the way that we get to

moving on to the directors i am carla johnson, interim director. the last time we met there was an election. there is a lot to be thankful for in the outcomes of the election at the national state and local level. also on two local measurs. prop b, 195 million dollar general obligation bond measure earmarked to provide renovations and improvements to our city parks. one of the reasons why that is so important to us here in the council and also to the mdc, these renovations advance access in the facilities. this is the way that we get to renovate recreation centers and playgrounds and bathrooms and trails. it was important for our transition plan work to have this funding source. that was a successful outcome. one of the benefit of the bond measure is that these improvements that have been taken place, different recreation centers, it was more accessible disaster shelters. these rec centers are on the list of available shelter site. back in 2005 we first started the survey, a lot of them were not renovated and are not successful. as would go back on

but i'm carla johnson, the interim director with the mayor's office on disability. and as you understand, we are the city's overall a-d-a coordinator here to make sure that all of our city programs and services and facilities comply with americans with disabilities act. and part of our role is actually to perform an architectural access plan review of important city projects as they come forward. we prefer to be involved with the city projects at the earliest possible stage and understanding that and [speaker not understood] the office of economic and work force development called a meeting that i was involved with about ten days ago in order to introduce me to the important project at an early stage. i had an opportunity to review the conceptual drawings and also to ask some fairly detailed questions about the universal design concept which was all entries are accessible entries. all paths have an accessible path collated right next to it and so forth. i have to say i was very impressed with design. often our office has to take on an educational role along with our
