on carleton, been levisohn, carleton english and jack hough was a very bad mood after that 9.1% inflation print and then some economic data some of which is surprisingly good. can you make sense of this. ben: it started as badly as you said. people became convinced the fed was going to raise interest rates by a full percentage point at its meeting by the end of the month. after that inflation print there started to be pushback from fed governor but then other economic data that showed consumers are spending money but only as much as it takes to keep up with inflation and dialing back for how far it will go up. these expectations had pulled back to 3 quarters of a point and the market had a great rally. jack: that is what the fed is trying to do. last week, you said you weren't buying this optimism. how do you feel now? >> i'm still worried. what is crazy is we have a great rally because the fed isn't going to raise rates a full percentage point but they will raise rates by 3 quarters of a point and that is a heck of a lot. we have that to contend with, the dollar is surging. they are at p

carleton: i feel good. jack: despite one good day on friday in the market, it is an ugly first half, the worst first half in decades, the worst for bonds. ben: super old as you know. s&p laughed -- last 20%. bonds, deutsche bank said it was the worst half of the 10 year treasury or any of its predecessors since 1788. it was a terrible year. jack: my 401(k) did badly that year. ben: three different bath stocks slipped on a bar of soap. bed, bath and beyond fell 23%, disastrous earnings, bath and body works, restoration hardware doesn't have bathroom in it but they sell things, last 10%, lower lowered guidance for the second time in a month. there is no economic term for triple stock collapse. i call it a bearish naked splash. it hasn't caught on but i'm waiting to see it. is this a broader deterioration for consumers? i will be listening. the consumer is the key to three scooby doo mysteries. how we entered a recession? the second is what will it due to inflation? jack: i can't do it. jack: will corporate ea

carleton: what does this mean for the us? carleton: we are in a global economy. weakness in europe becomes a problem in the us. last week you heard me say if you want to take a trip to europe because things are cheap, when your economy becomes crippled they are not buying from the us anymore. jack: and not a place you want to be the ecb chairwoman. i think we have reached a point in the bear market. netflix for example. jack: the fullest as tesla, amazon, networks, apple, meta platforms and alphabet, technically hand mama, it is inappropriate for a big tech acronym. for subscriber losses, the stock went up, what matters long-term by next year the cheaper add support, subscription that panelized -- cannibalize revenues and tesla reported production fell off because of shutdowns in china but stronger during the quarter and the company stuck to its goal for the year. that went up. you get to the heart of it, microsoft and alphabet on tuesday, meta platforms wednesday, amazon and apple thursday, microsoft and amazon giving us a read on cloud spending, pretty strong,
