but i also want to acknowledge him as a distinctive and beloved teacher and carlisle you're reminding me how important it is. keep track of your students. my first seminar, an african american history at harvard, was teaching ty and niall, who i've stayed contact with and said, there's nothing wrong with having an imagination and going on to be a historian. but oates's influence was so rooted in this campus this place that when the program was announced, i heard from a friend of mine, lisa frank, now a civil war historian, and she shared that she took his large civil war lecture class. during her first semester at umass amherst and was hooked. she a string of classes on hoffer and confides that he emphasized his students were so lucky he didn't hoard the credit, nor did he create a posse of apostles. he suggested it was a privilege to be surrounded by faculty and students here, the history department. frank that he made history come alive. generations of students. and although the department mourns his loss, can take pride that frank dropped her older off here this week from florida.
