i have had that great pleasure of working with the board president and carlos garcia. at another conference, the association of latino administrators and superintendents, having a national conference on the very important topic of how we improve education for latino communities across the country. i want to thank him for working so closely with us. luis herera has done so much for the libraries. thank you for such wonderful leadership. we get so excited when we open up libraries and increase the performance of our kids in school. all the kids are increasing participation. i get very excited about the city even more when all of our services are accessible to all of our communities in all different languages. you should not be surprised the both of my daughters who graduated from public-school also speaks spanish fluently. carlos garcia is the super intendent of the city and county. we are so lucky to have him in san francisco. we served in the fifth faster growing school system in clark county. he worked as a principle including horace man in san francisco. thank you very much super intendent for being here. nathaniel ford is the director of the transportation authority. prior to joining the municipal authority. he served for the atlantic authority for 5 years. he started as a train conductor in the new york city transit system. let's give it up for director ford. jim dierck is a principle, but not only a principle and an educator. he is someone who designd and developed innovative concepts where there was an incident that involved safety. for the work he was recognized at the national principle of the year. and he is somebody who is on the ground and has worked to empower young people at his school. he took his school from a different circumstances to be one of the highest performs school districts in the state. jim dierck. margaret brodkin is the director of t

[applause] >> we have a very special guest, carlos garcia is here to introduce our special guest. carlos. >> good afternoon. it is really a pleasure to move the schedule to accommodate this great man. truly a pleasure, because we have made him an honorary latino, even though he is the first asian member -- mayor of the city of san francisco. [applause] he is one of hours. honorable mayor lee was appointed to be the mayor and started his term in january, not too long ago. not too long ago he decided -- the community decided he was doing a good job, and everyone decided to push him -- he is a worker bee. he was an administrator in the city in three and a lot of different apartmendepartments aa great job. when the board of supervisors appointed him to be the interim mayor, little did we know he would do such a great job that there was a community out for. so be signed started to appear that said run, ed run. i am not taking sciensides becai work for everyone as a superintendent, but it has been a real honor and privilege working with the mayor who knows what work needs to happen to ge

that local 22 recently sat down -- we had a very good conversation with school superintendent carlos garcia, and he was like,it was'g baby steps right now in implementing that. it is very important. even people say, why are we doing high school? i said, ok. it is a lot of work, but we can do it. again, it is baby steps. not everybody -- no, you can go to college. they do not want to go to college but that is it. i did it for two years. that was it for me. it is possible. we're looking at it. again, it is going to be baby steps. i am looking forward to that, and it is very important. i also want to stress, you know, on the apprenticeship program, my boss, mike brown, when he mentioned, you know, what is key to this split on the a condition is, like, we have our nine-week boot camp training. we stress the importance of safety. safety, safety, safety. and i am the market representative, and i deal with a lot of these contractors they said, you know, why join the union? well, you know what, we have the training. the training and the safety. that is key. that is important. tell me what you have.

members of the school board were present as well as superintendent carlos garcia. youth had the opportunity to ask questions to the panel as well as provide their thoughts and insights on what they feel about school and how it is here in the district. they did a good job putting this together. this is something we will actually continue with the program during the school year. this is just an outline of what they did each week. beginning week was outreach. then we started with the actual tutorial and presentation. a lot of learning activities and games to enhance the algebra and the english learning with the youth. then the outcomes, which is something we are really excited and pleased about. we started with 96. 85 actually finished the program and completed. out of that 85, 11 of them were from colbert and's recovery program -- from burton's recovery program. seven of them had failed their algebra and english classes during the school year. out of the 74 coming through participation, 70 of them actually passable their math and algebra -- math and english classes.

it's really clear before i dive into this, obviously i would like to thank carlos garcia, in part for permanently fixing my name in legacy as bungalow dave but in general carlos, deputy superintendents lee and karanza for all the members of the board of education who have not only supported the facility program but trusted us repeatedly to do the work that we were entrusted to do, be allowed to sort of do it well by all of you and for that i'm grateful and particularly president mendoza. one of the first people i met when i came to the district and who from day one has been phenomenally supportive. over the summer, nobody can remodel schools without phenomenal support from every principal whose school we're tearing apart. some of those principals were brand new and had no idea they were walking into a school that was half destroyed and had to be ready by the start of school and fortunately, one of the schools, francis scott key, for example, the principal lives across the street, that makes things easier, but in general, some phenomenal support and from all the teachers in the distric

[applause] >> thank you. finally, the voters and the board a dozen years or so ago made a very important policy statement, and that was declaring san francisco to be a transit first policy city. that does not mean about transit only. the policy is about getting people out of their cars, providing better, safer, more convenient, safer ways for people to get around san francisco, which includes by bicycle and walking. if we want to get people on their bicycles and walking, they need to be safe, and that is what this initiative is about. carter realizing that policy takes a lot of work from folks not only within the mta and our partner agencies and the school district, but people outside the government. there are some very strong advoca
