would not be able to do this without the leadership of the school district, i would like to thank carlos garciaand ask and to come up. >> thank you. carlos will do. this is very incredible. the last week of school i felt sorry for them. the last thing that you want to be as a principle is to be involved with anything in the first and last week of school. i have to tell you that all the research and education -- you can have really great teachers at school, but the one common thread on most of the effective schools in the country is having great principles. without them, you will not have a great school. to find three people out of the hundred principles that we have -- this is a tough task. but they chose three all stars to represent the school district, and everyone of them has done a superb job demonstrating why we have such effective schools and grade teachers. i want to thank merely for stepping up and continuing this tradition because this is a family, and the city is only as good as its schools, and they're only as good as the community and the city. this is just the beginning. schools ke

carlos garcia is the super intendent of the city and county. we are so lucky to have him in san francisco. we served in the fifth faster growing school system in clark county. he worked as a principle including horace man in san francisco. thank you very much super intendent for being here. nathaniel ford is the director of the transportation authority. prior to joining the municipal authority. he served for the atlantic authority for 5 years. he started as a train conductor in the new york city transit system. let's give it up for director ford. jim dierck is a principle, but not only a principle and an educator. he is someone who designd and developed innovative concepts where there was an incident that involved safety. for the work

i am here today with carlos garcia. thank you for being here. the relationship with the school continues. the work with me as the education adviser, it constantly on a weekly of got every other day basis. letting us know about the programs we are doing, what more we can do. it is a topic i always want to keep in front of me. watching out for the future of our kids, watching out for their safety as well as their continuing harassment in all the programs that we have. along with carlos, we have marie sue. they are in charge of a lot of the programs that we have centralized and try to match all of the needs of their, making sure we have the best programs possible. she had a lot of announcements to make today. you will see more of this elsewhere. we are not standing on the soggy ground. now that we're doing things smarter, the recreation and parks department is there for us. they are here to make announcements about the summer programs we have had our reflective they are in his attempt to do more in the summer camp program, where more for you to mak

thanks to the leadership of hydrogen and carlos garcia, we have a plan we are implementing all over the state to work with schools in advancing literacy in elementary schools, middle school, math and college pathways. these are now having an effect all over the state. we are doing this with our members in various communities. we have a council here in san francisco. i would like to recommend it -- lee members of our -- our members that are here tonight on a graduate from the school district. ron erickson graduated from balboa high school in 1960. ed lim credit from galileo academy of science and technology in 1966. he was smart enough to marry a wonderful woman named and that who served for many years as a principal of our school district. one of the important jobs i had this year was launching a new scholarship program. thank you so much. the nations of california grant about $1.30 million in scholarships every year. we were caused to stop and think about what we are doing and to make a more profound district. we were able to carve off this year $157,000 for a new program called invest
