carlos garcia is the super intendent of the city and county. we are so lucky to have him in san francisco. we served in the fifth faster growing school system in clark county. he worked as a principle including horace man in san francisco. thank you very much super intendent for being here. nathaniel ford is the director of the transportation authority. prior to joining the municipal authority. he served for the atlantic authority for 5 years. he started as a train conductor in the new york city transit system. let's give it up for director ford. jim dierck is a principle, but not only a principle and an educator. he is someone who designd and developed innovative concepts where there was an incident that involved safety. for the work he was recognized at the national principle of the year. and he is somebody who is on the ground and has worked to empower young people at his school. he took his school from a different circumstances to be one of the highest performs school districts in the state. jim dierck. margaret brodkin is the director of t

san francisco school board supervisor carlos garcia and others are making the rounds this morning, this being the first day of school in the city of san francisco. it's also the release date of standardized test scores that showed student performance in the classroom is on the rise. >> the number of parents and little ones arriving at the paul revere school were too many to count. if some, it was a trip they made before. but others if it was for if first time. for administrators, faculty and it was an opportunity to be boastful. the 2011 standardized testing and reporting program, star exams, set to be revealed this morning. according to the california department of education, the california students continue to steadily improve performance across the board. with larger portion than ever scoring proficient or higher. this is good news for paul revere when 70% of the students are identified as socioeconomically disadvantaged and students of color primarily. >> it's a lot of things. i feel like really big. really glad. >> the school and community have been working to turn around the histo

[applause] >> thank you. finally, the voters and the board a dozen years or so ago made a very important policy statement, and that was declaring san francisco to be a transit first policy city. that does not mean about transit only. the policy is about getting people out of their cars, providing better, safer, more convenient, safer ways for people to get around san francisco, which includes by bicycle and walking. if we want to get people on their bicycles and walking, they need to be safe, and that is what this initiative is about. carter realizing that policy takes a lot of work from folks not only within the mta and our partner agencies and the school district, but people outside the government. there are some very strong advoca

thanks to the leadership of hydrogen and carlos garcia, we have a plan we are implementing all over the state to work with schools in advancing literacy in elementary schools, middle school, math and college pathways. these are now having an effect all over the state. we are doing this with our members in various communities. we have a council here in san francisco. i would like to recommend it -- lee members of our -- our members that are here tonight on a graduate from the school district. ron erickson graduated from balboa high school in 1960. ed lim credit from galileo academy of science and technology in 1966. he was smart enough to marry a wonderful woman named and that who served for many years as a principal of our school district. one of the important jobs i had this year was launching a new scholarship program. thank you so much. the nations of california grant about $1.30 million in scholarships every year. we were caused to stop and think about what we are doing and to make a more profound district. we were able to carve off this year $157,000 for a new program called invest
