i have had that great pleasure of working with the board president and carlos garcia.strators and superintendents, having a national conference on the very important topic of how we improve education for latino communities across the country. i want to thank him for working so closely with us. luis herera has done so much for the libraries. thank you for such wonderful leadership. we get so excited when we open up libraries and increase the performance of our kids in school. all the kids are increasing participation. i get very excited about the city even more when all of our services are accessible to all of our communities in all different languages. you should not be surprised the both of my daughters who graduated from public-school also speaks spanish fluently. yes was so honored to be here and to join you in giving this incredible award to superintendent carlos garcia. i have had the honor to work with him to launch an exciting program called kindergarten to college, which opens up automatically for every child entering the san francisco public schools at kindergarten a college savings account. it puts an initial deposit in for each and every one of those children. it is funded by the city. it is administered by the treasurer's office, and it is in a strong partnership with the school district. the reason we're doing this is that studies show that if a child grows up with a college savings account in the child's name, that child is seven times more likely to go to college than a child without a similar account. we want to bring that kind of success to every child here in san francisco. thank you to you all and to the san francisco public schools. superintendent carlos garcia. youth had the opportunity to ask questions to the panel as well as provide their thoughts and insights on what they feel about school and how it is here in the district. they did a good job putting this together. this is something we will actually continue with the program during the school year. this is just an outline of what they did each week. beginning week was outreach. then we started with the actual tutorial and presentation. a lot of learning activities and games to enhance the algebra and the english learning with the youth. then the outcomes, which is something we are really excited and pleased about. we started with 96. 85 actually finished the program and completed. out of that 85, 11 of them were from colbert and's recovery program -- from burton's recovery program. seven of them had failed their algebra and english classes during the school year. out of the 74 coming through participation, 70 of them actually passable their math and algebra -- math and english classes.

that local 22 recently sat down -- we had a very good conversation with school superintendent carlos garcia, and he was like,it was'g baby steps right now in implementing that. it is very important. even people say, why are we doing high school? i said, ok. it is a lot of work, but we can do it. again, it is baby steps. not everybody -- no, you can go to college. they do not want to go to college but that is it. i did it for two years. that was it for me. it is possible. we're looking at it. again, it is going to be baby steps. i am looking forward to that, and it is very important. i also want to stress, you know, on the apprenticeship program, my boss, mike brown, when he mentioned, you know, what is key to this split on the a condition is, like, we have our nine-week boot camp training. we stress the importance of safety. safety, safety, safety. and i am the market representative, and i deal with a lot of these contractors they said, you know, why join the union? well, you know what, we have the training. the training and the safety. that is key. that is important. tell me what you have.
