i am excited that we're here with carlos garcia, our superintendent. unfortunately not for much longer, but fortunately for the length of time that he was. jose and alicia, your our vip's of the day. we look forward to hearing your story. and roberto, that is a college program that is very important. i want to say how this fits into some things. when the president became president, we had the recovery act, which is done great things for san francisco, i am proud to say. but part of it was the jobs now initiative. it had different names in different communities. but san francisco was in the lead and demonstrated to other cities how you can take advantage of this public-private partnership and what it meant to not only young people but some a little older than young people as well. a new congress who did not have the opportunity to renew that, some of us went to the president, many from this area. we went to the president and do it, but the need is still there, but it is not going to pass legislatively. so we want you to do it by executive order. we will

[applause] >> good morning. i am so pleased to be here as one of these older young people. and i am really glad that eric recognized the youth who are here, because when i look out on to this room, and all of us were here on stage, we spend a lot of time in this room, this is possibly the most diverse room that i have seen today. we have young people, we have adults, we have folks represented every sector in san francisco. we have business leaders representing every industry in our city. we have neighborhood leaders. we have folks from every community. that is the rich diversity of san francisco. i want to thank all of you for coming to this all hands on deck moment. eric took a moment to reminisce about his time as a young person. when i was in high school, i spend a summer working as a janitor at the local public high school. it taught me how to clean anything. i cleaned desks, lockers, bathroo

carlos garcia. thank you. >> good morning. it is exciting to be here. i remember about five years ago, we were talking about doing something like this. all of the people who worked together, we all got together and we were dreaming about creating something that would guarantee every student in san francisco wanted to go to college, to have that opportunity. and we have done it, folks. if there's anybody who does not want to go to college, you are making a bad decision. there are no excuses of why you cannot gynecologist. -- there are those cases of what you cannot go to college. we do not want any excuses of what you cannot make it to city college. they opened up the door, giving your first priority to register. the chancellor did a great job for us. anybody who wants to come who goes to san francisco unified school district, the doors are open first for them. here is your chance, there are no excuses. it is easy to say you cannot pay for it, all the different reasons. there is an answer and a way to do it if you what to do it. people like myself, peopl

and we did a press conference with the superintendent, both carlos garcia and the mayor about the importance of summer learning and the gap that happens during the term, and on saturday the 28 is last budget town hall. this is going to be for districts 10 and 11, which i think are crucial nein terms of budget support, and it is going to be at the city arts high school, and on wednesday there will be one other opportunities for the budget and town hall, and this is for district 1 and district 5, and that is going to be at golden gate park. >> thank you, of president lee. i have one announcement. cleveland elementary school will be holding up a silent auction this coming saturday at 5:00, and it will be a 16th and rhode island, so if you want tune in -- if you want to support the parents at cleveland elementary school that are trying to raise money to pay for computers, come on down. >> i want to say frisco day is cool, especially when one student was able to get a free laptop. there were a lot of students out there, and they were engaged in terms of the workshops but were offered, so i feel l

i just wanted to acknowledge that carlos garcia, our superintendent, was honored at the event because he was retiring and stepping down for the council. i want to remind people that all of our high school students will be going to three sites, most of whom will be going to city college. those who have not registered for anything, we will register them for city college no matter what. there will be a large group going to street mary's -- st. mary's. then mission day has opened their campus for all of the kids going to a uc system. this will be an opportunity for them to burn about the transition from high school to college. -- learn about the transition from high school to college. the asia-pacific celebration is on may 8. there is a challenge to submit a community service or art project that relates to asian heritage. that deadline is april 13. a club can win $750 for their club, which is a pretty big deal. we have over 90 nominations for the teacher of the month award. it was probably one of the largest we have had. we will be narrowing down those nominations and we will be making an

use and where as mayor lee asked democratic leader nancy pelosi, school district superintendent carlos garciaard of supervisors are challenging san francisco's public sector companies to participate in the program by creating an unprecedented number of high quality summer jobs and paid internships for san francisco's young people to match or exceed the number of summer jobs and paid internships provided by city departments and finally where as through the partnership of the city, private sector companies and nonprofit community-based organizations, san francisco summer jobs plus seeks to create more than 5,000 high quality summer jobs and paid internship opportunities for our city's young people including work ready youth, at-risk youth, and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and communities. i think that is very much in keeping with the city's commitment to keep families in the city if there are no opportunities for youth, then i think that's an incentive to keep people, families here is by providing opportunities for their -- for the youth. so that being said, i would like to -- we
