for petty personal relations to have thrown pascual out, i think it was a mistake. i think carlospass call was probably the most sophisticated ambassador the united states has had in mexico in many, many, many, years. i also think he was the one who became most deeply attached to mexicoment and -- mexico. and i think he was the one with the best channels of communication in washington in a very long time. because even my good friend tony gars saw, you can only call the president so many times. this notion that the ambassador's a very good friend of president bush and so he can -- he can call him once every two, three, four, five months. can't call him every day. every time you have a problem, can't call the president. doesn't work that way. [laughter] so i think it was a big mistake. and i think the more traditional way of doing things has been to avoid going beyond a limit in confrontation with the united states. and in that sense it's been wise. i don't think, though, that what i refer to in the book is really confrontation with third parties though i get brought into the confro
