cnn's carlos suarez, who's been dodging high waters and joins us now by phone, carlos, where are you and what are you seeing? >> yeah, anderson. so we are right now in st. petersburg. we began the day a little bit about 15:20 minutes to the south and the west of cp, we were in gulfport. that is a part of a city in pinellas county that's really is known to flood and we began the day they're having covered two other hurricanes the last couple of years where we knew that that specific neighborhood because it's a low-lying area, was going to flood of a problem that we ran into. is that around 23, 4:00 this afternoon as that >> we became unsafe for us to stay there, and so we decided to move a few blocks north where the water hadn't reached just yet, but then our team and meteorologists told us, look at this point because the storm is still to the west of you and it still has to track north. and because of the sheer size of it, you're probably going to get another four feet of snow storm surge. so you really need to get out of there. so we left gulf port and we're going to try to get back

cnn's carlos suarez has more security around trump's mar-a-lago property was visible in the hours after incident at the golf course. it is important to note that some of these security measures were put in place after the first attempted assassination of the former president in pennsylvania southern boulevard, which connects the mainland to palm beach, was opened on sunday with two security checkpoints. now, a small island that's you have to cross to get onto palm beach however, a was close to the public and unless you live near mar-a lago or you're visiting someone who does you really cannot get onto that barrier island because a street that runs along the perimeter has been closed by the secret service anytime that the former president is at his property. now, we are about ten to 15 minutes from the golf course where this incident happened on sunday. but it really took us much longer to get from that location here in large part because several streets around the golf course, were closed as a result of the investigation. and we expect that those roads will remain closed and that some o

let's go right now to cnn correspondent carlos suarez in st. petersburg, florida, just southwest of tampa. you have had to move to higher ground all throughout the night because of the flooding in the area, what are you seeing so far? >> that's exactly right, laura. so we began today out in gulfport. that is about 20 minutes from where we are. but because of the storm surge that they are late this afternoon, anywhere between four to six feet of it. we had to find higher ground and then from there, we tried to make our way back to hillsborough, which is the tampa area, but because several bridges have been closed because of this storm, we decided to stay put in st. petersburg and the flooding here is just as bad as it was over in gulfport. if you can kind of make out where on that because much of this neighborhood is without power, you can see he just how much of the bay has pushed into this one street out here. the white stuff that you might be able to make out in some of this water here, some of this bay water we believe to be a part of some s

cnn's carlos suarez is joining us now from gulfport. that's on florida's west coast carlos as helene insurance offshore. what are the conditions like where you are right there well, wolf, the worst of the weather that we have seen this entire day was within the last hour or so. >> in fact, things were so bad. we spent a good part of the day all the way at the far end of the street. but the flooding is just two tens. all of that water started coming in from the bay and it just was no longer safe for us to say in that location. and so what we've done is we've moved several blocks to the north of where we are as you noted, we are in pinellas county. we are just west of tampa where the big concern going into the storm is the storm surge we'll see what the hurricane as well as some of the strong winds that clearly we're experiencing at this hour emergency officials were really worried because even though this storm is going to stay to the west of us, and it is not going to have a direct impact. on pinellas county. we are still going to see an

clearwater, florida record storm surges and so so many coastal communities, let's get to cnn's carlos suarez, who is in gulfport, florida this morning, carlos. you add a remarkable day and night yesterday as the storm surge pushed inland in ways that i don't think a lot of people were expecting even where you are, what are you seeing this morning? >> yeah, john. so that storm surge yesterday at its peak was about six feet. and in fact we were at this very location yesterday afternoon when it just became unsafe for us to stay here. and so we had to evacuate. we made our way inland. we are back out at the same location where we are we're yesterday and to give you a sense of just how high the water was yesterday for our live location. my photographer george, was perched up just a top that stopped the top of the stairs there by the time we left yesterday and nightfall had fallen, hear the water was well above that line and so that's why all of this area here has been damaged. the national guard is already here on the scene in gulfport. you can see there's at least 123 boats that were pushed out

and cnn's carlos suarez is live for us in st. petersburg. we see people they're getting ready for this. carlos, what's it like on the ground? >> well, brianna, we are in pinellas county in an area that is known to flood. we are at one of two sandbag distribution flights that have opened here in the city of st. petersburg, all in anticipation of helene's expected rainfall as well as the five to eight feet of storm surge as you can see, the work that is well under way out here, the line of cars a stretches around the block. folks line up here and there, able to get there, sandbags and take them to their homes or their businesses all in efforts to try to get all of this expected rain out of their homes and their businesses or over a dozen counties across the state of florida are under a mandatory event accusation, including right here in pinellas county, over in hillsborough county, just to the east of us. that is home to tampa. that area is also under a mandatory event accusation. folks that live anywhere along the coast, the southwest coast of

let's bring in cnn's carlos suarez and gulfport, florida. what are you seeing there, carlos pamela, good morning. >> so we are inside of a restaurant here in gulfport that was basically destroyed by the strong surge and the intense kind of the wins that we saw last night yesterday. so this is what it looks like right now. you can see exactly where everything inside this restaurant was just pushed up against each other because of the about six to eight feet of storm surge that pushed in here. if you can go to your left here, i can show you just how close this restaurant is to the bay here that part there yesterday began inching in closer to this area around two or 3:00 in the afternoon. and by about eight and 9:00 at night, the water was probably about but as high as that mark right there where you see that kind of exposed wall right there. we spoke to the owner of this place just a few minutes ago and she was telling us that they had just finished some repairs from last year's hurricane. i've been here for three years now covering three diffe

desperately holding on as the rescue team finds them before hoisting them into a helicopter cnn's carlos suarez is standing by for us in st. petersburg, florida. carlos, what's happening there at this hour? >> well, dana, i'll pinellas county was one of the areas that was hit hardest by the flooding yesterday. and in fact the national guard is at this hour coordinating the recovery and safety efforts out here, in large part because you can't walk too far without seeing some of the damage out here. this syllable behind me is one have about nearly half a dozen that came crashing ashore in yesterday's storm. again, you really cannot get too far without seeing just how much of this storm impacted this part of gulfport and pinellas county this right here used to be a part of a floating dock that you can see clearly broke free of its pylon, its concrete pylon out in the bay out there, and came to a stop right here. this part of pinellas county where we were at yesterday, he got anywhere between four to six feet of a storm surge. and so when all of that water came from the bay, it pushed all of this b

i also want to go now to cnn's carlos suarez, who is in st. petersburg, florida. carlos obviously you've been dodging, you know, a lot of this is you're seeing the worst effects of this. what are you seeing right now? in st. petersburg >> we are in pinellas county, which has effectively been cut off from the mainland and that's because several bridges that connect pinellas county over to hillsborough county, which is the tampa area as well as braiding sent to the south. they have been closed because of the strong winds and all of the flooding associated with this storm. in fact, with this hurricane to the north of where we are right now at this hour, you can still see all of this water being pushed in from the gulf as well as the tampa bay. all of this is associated with that hurricane. were talking about at least four feet of storm surge earlier today. and we're told our meteorologist tell us that we could be getting anywhere between three to four more feet of storm surge. again, all of this is taking place with the storm effectively having passed up an alice coun

. >> now, after the city announced that power was cut to a water treatment the facility, cnn's carlos suarez reports from st. pete on the unprecedented storm surge we began today out in gulfport. >> that is about 20 minutes from where we are. but because of the storm surge that they are late this afternoon anywhere between four to six feet of it. we had to find higher ground and then from there, we tried to make our way back to hillsborough, which is the tampa area, but because several bridges have been closed because of this storm, we decided to stay put in st. petersburg and the flooding here is just as bad as it it was over in gulfport. if you can kind of make out where i'm at because much of this neighborhood is without power. you can see just how much of the bay has pushed into this one street out here the white stuff that you might be able to make out in some of this water here, some of this bay water. we believe to be a part of some styrofoam, a part of a concrete, a doc that was broken in half, that sits just behind me, but it's really difficult for you to make out just because again
