we are in carlsbad, about a half hour drive north of san diego. three homes at least destroyed here in carlsbad but within the last hour i want to show you over my shoulder here you can see the thick black smoke, that's to our west in san marcos. you mentioned san marcos. this is where cal state san marcos is, the university has been evacuated as well as other areas in northern san diego county. this two of five major fire that's have burned today. the fires fueled by strong santa ana winds and scorching heat. we got an update from fire officials just a short time ago. they told us that three homes in carlsbad had been damaged but within the last hour i can tell you an apartment complex was on fire. one building with ten units. that fire apparently started by embers that had drifted over onto the building. 15 to 20 other homes have also been damaged and needless to say this is going to be a long night for fire crews. 15,000 people have been evacuated here in carlsbad, many others over in san marcos and other areas. there's also a fire burning at c

how's the situation in carlsbad?nk you for all your thoughts and your sendout to everybody here on this side of the country. we very much appreciate it, and the opportunity to tell you that. the forward progress of this fire, meaning that the bulk of it where it's chewing up the acreage has been slowed or stopped. and that's the good news. we have about just in the city of carlsbad 23,000 evacuation notices and most of those being mandatory. the others being advisory and suggested evacuations. now that we have the forward progress stopped, we should not have to evacuate any more citizens. right now we're looking at 15 damaged or destroyed homes and an acreage that is just over 100 acre -- this is a very small acreage fire with a tremendous amount of loss. these fires in southern california move extreme -- very fast. they're what we would consider in the wildland firefighting arena to be very high intensity wildland events but short in duration. so the fire started at 10:30 this morning and now we're looking at the fo

but here in carlsbad, they really got hit hard. can see a couple of homes leveled to the ground. this home right here where fire crews have been continuing to put out some of the hot spots all day long and then right next to this house you can see another home leveled to the ground. you know, you had nine fires going at once. one county official telling me he's never seen anything like it. and he's questioning -- and you talked about it earlier, questioning whether these fires were intentionally set. they are treating these fires, all of them, basically, at the crime scene and no evidence of arson. this is supposed to be the hottest day, jake. we're expecting triple digit temperatures and the winds are continuing to pick up and that's what is basically fueling the fire there in san marcos. you've got a couple dozen military aircraft dumping water and firefighters on the ground. you've got a lot of resources battling this thing and it goes to show you when you have the drought conditions combined with the wind, it really creates a l

carlsbad, they've had a lot of problems.em today is it's between 98 and 100 degrees. the winds are out of the east, so coming from the inland areas toward the sea. you're getting -- when the winds come from the east in southern california you get desert air. it is bone dry. usually 4 or 5, 6% humidity. the winter at 10-15 miles an hour. they have to prepare for the absolute worst. there are five fires total right now. this is the one in carlsbad. it doesn't look like a lot here. they move so fast because it's so dry. there is an evacuation center set up in an elementary school. and evacuation at camp pendleton. those two go together brilliantly. we have video at camp pendleton and you can see the fire there. there are five fires in southern california. there is no question this is going to be a disastrous fire season. they should have gotten rain for months on end, not a lot of rain like the rest of us get but enough to get moisture in there and they got none. so now they're very worried what the fire season is going to brin

fortunes are shifting with the winds in carlsbad, california. 48 hours ago the sky in carlsbad was orange with smoke and flames looking like mass godzilla leaves behind. today it seems as though things are starting to look up for the community. i'm joined now on the phone by carlsbad mayor matt hall. i know it's been a crazy week four. at this point do you believe your firefighters have the fire completely contained? >> we're at 85%. any time you have conditions that we're in today, trying to get the hot spots out can sometimes take several days. so we weigh in on the side of caution and we still have people out in the area, you know, looking at some of these places that are still smoldering. >> what's the status on the evacuation order. has it been lifted for everyone in your town? >> it's been lifted for everyone. there's some areas where the most damage was done where we're still having police presence, but we've got just about everybody back into their home at this time. except for those that were lost. >> right. now that you're getting a handle on the fire what's the next move? will

this was the scene in carlsbad earlier. when thousands were told to evacuate: snarled traffic as people tried to get away from the fast- moving flames. evacuations have been canceled around fires east of san diego in lakeside. and also to the north, at the camp pendleton marine base. every public school in the san diego area. will be closed tomorrow. that's more than 200-schools. serving more than 130-thousand students. here in the bay area, some schools in richmond took special precautions against the heat today. many of the schools in the district. don't have air conditioning. school officials say, they are turning off the lights and closing window blinds. to keep the temperature down. the school board president says, the district plans to renovate and update school buildings soon. on fire watch. in the east bay. with a park officer looking to stamp-out bad behavior that could erupt into flames. philippe djegal continues our team coverage. officer erin o'neill has spent 12 years with the east bay regional park district. a

carlsbad right now 91 degrees. we did hit 100 today. humidity 8%. single digits. the dew point has been in the single digits. earlier today temperatures did go down a little bit with a shift in wind, which is good news. and that was what allowed those helicopters to get up in the air. but we still have wind gusts about 15 to 20 miles per hour inland locations, 20 to 30. and the foothills and the mountains today, we had wind gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour. so it was very intense for a while. but now starting to slack off a little bit as we go forward tomorrow into friday, then we'll really start to see the winds die down, which is excellent news. unfortunately, we're not going to get the rain, but at least we'll get cooler temperatures, and we will get lighter winds as we go into the weekend. relative humidity will start to increase as well. will start to get that onshore flow. so that will start to increase the humidity, which is what you want as well. so erin, we're not going get the rain, but we'll get cooler temperatures. higher humidity levels. the winds wil

they were able to put up a stand and defend and the carlsbad fire. they say in all 20 buildings have earned down in san diego county. over my right shoulder the san marcos fire. one official saying it could just be coincidence that there were six fires in northern san diego county on one hot blustery may day. then again suggesting perhaps these are all suspicious. they do not know how these blazes started. this is a row their early start fire season it is only may, these are the kind of temperatures and conditions and fires you would expect to see in the middle of summer. what happened here today, the devils pitchfork. you had very high winds, hot temperatures and humidity that was less than 10%. all of that making the firefight very difficult, they did make a stand here, 20 houses may sound awful but it's not a lot when you consider all the fires burning in san diego county. the silver lining in all of this is the winds are dying down right now, but they expect them to come back up. reporting live from carlsbad paul birkenau back to you. >>> bay are

our local station in san diego, kswb, has been standing by in carlsbad. fire has just raised up the hill and now they are scrambling the fire department has come in to try to get this entire place evacuated. this is the scene all along the 5 freeway from carlsbad, into san diego itself, at camp pendleton. this is a live look at our local station. this neighborhood they just told us is about to go. so the fire department is kicking the news crews, the residents, everybody out there. the fire department seems to believe they are not going to be able to save this neighborhood or so many more that are going up in and around the carlsbad area. the evacuation totals are now at 15,000 for the region and we've been watching home after home burn. look at this fire-nado that we just watched. the winds are swirling to such a degree and the heat so intense, these have been showing up all over the place. this one at the top of the canyons. they create their own wind within the fire and as they top it out, these fire-naodos. home after home being burned to the ground.

joining us from carlsbad is akiko fujita.ense of what's going on on the ground right now. >> reporter: well, john and michaela, you said it, a lot of people out here just asking what time of the year is it? because this is really early for fires to start up. usually fire season doesn't really get started until july and august. i can tell you these fires have really shut down much of san diego county. you mentioned it, schools closed. we know the university just to the east of us, cal state-san marcos had to cancel their graduation ceremony this weekend. and you can just smell the disaster all over. i want to show you this building behind me because this is one of two homes on this block in carlsbad that was completely destroyed. this structure engulfed in flames yesterday. now, having said that, we are hearing some good news on the ground. at least here in the city of carlsbad. the fire here, 60% contained. that's the good news. but it was a different scene yesterday. i want to bring in steve van dyke who is a resident. he li

this is one of the homes that burned in carlsbad a total loss. the flames. we were here yesterday when fire surrounded this community. in fact, at times the smoke was so thick you could really only see a couple feet in front of you. we were here for about 30 minutes before firefighters arrived. they were busy in other communities nearby saving homes, before they were able to get here. we watched them douse several fires on homes and make quick work of it here in this community. last night, the family that lives in this home came back here to survey the damage. they say what they saw was completely unrecognizable. now as far as the weather is concerned today, we are under another red flag high wind warning. temperatures are expected to be in the mid 90s again. so it's not as bad as yesterday. but again, firefighters are very concerned. >> carter, thanks. >>> reporter steve price of our san diego affiliate, kfmb had to deal with the wildfires firsthand. >> reporter: we walked into this backyard, and we noticed that the fence was on fire back here t
