caverns in carlsbad, new mexico.u're willing to travel below the surface. >> reporter: beneath this landscape lies a world that's being explored and discovered. carlsbad caverns national park is home to the largest cave chamber in the entire country. there are 118 caves below the desert surface and 180 miles of known passageways. for the last half million years, carlsbad cavern has decorated itself drip by drip by drip. moisture, minerals and time have turned droplets of water into works of art. some of these impressive cave formation s have just as impres impressive names. stalagmites. stalactites. others sound adorable. like popcorn, soda straws and draperies. half a million tourists every year come here to carlsbad caverns. >> yes. >> reporter: and i wanted to be >> i'm so excited. we're going into the caverns. let's do it! the first thing you notice down here, the temperature drops up. up there, it's 100 degrees. here, it's in the 50s, humidity is higher and cave swallow droppings. it's like ambrosia. >> reporter
