cnbc contributor carly fiorina was the chairman and ceo of hp.he joins us now for the first time since the news broke. thanks for joining us. >> great to be with you. >> fist, let me ask you about y your reaction to this mess. >> yes, you know, hp is a company i love. it's an important company to the country and the world, and now a company i think is at a very difficult juncture because it's not just that acquisitions are getting written off, it's that really confidence is being destroyed. my first reaction was this is the third one in a row. eds was written down completely. palm clearly didn't help in terms of the personal products and the personal computing space. now autonomy. so to me, that suggests not just a single problem with an acquisition but maybe a systemic set of problems. >> so a systemic set of problems. is that leadership? is that just, you know, failed vision? is the autonomy deal one that you would have ever done, for example? >> well, look, it's very difficult to answer hypotheticals like that because i wasn't in the boardroom

think the economy is excellent or good because it's not so bad as other parts of the country. >> carly fiorinaconomic issues are ruling the day, as we see state polling closing, it's dictated by folks' feelings about their local economy. carly? we'll get back to carly. >> never had her at a loss of words. >> that's got to be a mike problem. >> we'll get to you in a second. >> i voted in virginia early this morning and there were long lines. in fact, i would be pretty surprised if the polls closed in virginia when they were supposed to given how long the lines. if you're in line you get to vote. that's important. look, i took a lot from what michele was saying about momentum. i think momentum makes a big difference in how people think about the economy and shape their vote on the economy. even more so than levels. you can have a high unemployment rate as keith mentioned in virginia it's quite low, have a high unemployment rate but if people feel that rate is moving in the right direction, which by the way it is, nationally, and more so in some of the big key states that helps the president. >>

former ceo carly fiorina bought compaq for $25 billion. it led to a backlash that ultimately cost her the job. she was replaced by mark herd, who, in addition to buying palm for $1.2 billion, then quickly cancelling hp's palm related products was ousted over financial and personal improprieties. the next hp ceo bought autonomy software for $11.5 billion. then he was fired. among the hp board members approving the deal, current hp ceo meg whitman. she says her company was lied to by autonomy. >> we believe that there is a willful effort on the part of certain members of autonomy management to mislead shareholders when autonomy was a publicly held company and mislead potential buyers, including hp. >> so in a move sure to overshadow its new line of products, hp is taking an $8.8 billion charge on the autonomy deal, admitting it made a huge mistake, even though it's kind of glad it bought it. >> listen, what i will tell you about autonomy is we still like the business. we like the technology. we think it's going to be an important part of hp'

when you consider the fact this board hired and fired carly fiorina, hired and fired mark herd, and now we've got meg whitman. what is going on with this board? all those people who were hired and fired in such a short period of time. >> maria, meg whitman was on that board. let's not forget that. >> and it was ann livermore's decision. she was leading the autonomy deal. also, then she retired and went on the board. >> isn't taking the board on a little bit too far? the board didn't do the due diligence. >> what are they doing? what are they getting paid for then? what is the board of hewlett-packard being paid for? >> i'm sure they're presented with due diligence findings. i'd be astonished if they weren't. to say it's up to the board to get this stuff out -- >> who do you blame? >> bob, what you seem to be saying is -- >> i'm not blaming anyone. >> stuff happens. >> stuff does happen. frankly, with -- in the last two years, there have been 60,000 deals. to say this proves there's something fundamentally flawed about deals or hp or anything else, i think it's a little naive. >> okay. w
