the chp shuts down part of highway 1, south of carmel.ws are battling this fire and here is the challenge. strong winds are fanning these flames. cal fire says tonight 75 to 100 acres already burned. let's bring in jeff ranieri. >> the way the wind is going right now, we are seeing wind gusts in the area of big sur right where the fire location is of 20 to 40 miles an hour. when we look close of the direction, it is coming from the south and east pushing off the smoke and flames towards the pacific. it could help slow and spread of this fire. winds over night, 20 to 40, through the morning, 15 to 35. we should start seeing winds become calmer. we have all of that rainfall in october. record setting rainfall, if you have a big enough ignition point, a fire could start any day. something to keep in mind. we'll learn more about this in the coming hours. back here across the bay area, winds warning up for our mountains. we'll take a look at when we could get some rain. >> stay with us the latest on the wind and this fire in carmel. we'll cont

it is burg near carmel by the sea. the fire broke out friday evening.e has downsized that fire. official believed more than 1,000 acres have burned but only 700 tonight. a lot of people are wondering. we had rain, they had rain. what's going on in. >> it has to do with the changing climate. what we're undergoing is called precipitation whiplash. in october, we had record setting rainfall. november, we had some rain. december came in strong with the rain and now we have been setting up for drier weather. these extended dry periods we've had coupled with the drought has been bringing up some elevated fire danger. specifically on friday when that fire started, we had all three parameters. the fair weather triangle in place. you can get fast wild fair spread. we have the winds, the topography. a lot of hilly terrain. this is what helped to spread that fire. with our warming temperatures, it will mean more frequent drought. this could be the norm here. the forecast is in less than ten minutes. >>> california was made the first and only state to have a covid

so far, highway 1 in carmel is closed in both directions. i spoke to monterey supervisor askew. 2020, 20% of the population had to evacuate after multiple fires hit the region. tonight, they are having flashbacks of that. >> people are working to get out of the area. we know fires are unpredictable and that many of the roads leading up to highway 1 are narrow tree lines,. we want everyone to be safe. if you are near the fire, we encourage everyone to heed the sheriff's orders. luz: again, the monterey county sheriffs office issued an evacuation order for areas west of the palo colorado road to highway 1. orders are mandatory. we will continue to stay on this. dan: luz, thanks. the winds fanning these flames. let's go to sandhya patel tracking the conditions in the fire zone tonight. sandhya: unfortunately, winds have been in the 30 to 40 mile-per-hour range with the gusts. relative humidity at the calfire portable, 11%. this combined with the drought, down sloping wind is drying out the air even more. the wind taking you back in time. the radar picking up that plume of moisture

to piece together exactly what sparked this fire last night at palo colorado canyon just south of carmel by the sea. a mandatory evacuation order is in effect tonight for areas along highway one and highway one is closed in both directions. closer to home tonight, thousands of big area of pg and e customers have been dealing with power outages today pg and e says during the height of this wind storm more than 16,000 of its customers were in the dark. this is video courtesy of the citizen app of some of the damage left behind. you can see those high winds knocking down a number of trees like this scene in oakland. crews are working around the clock according to pg need to try to get the lights back on to everyone. >> san francisco fire tweeted out these pictures today of firefighters performing a cliff rescue for duke. a mixed breed dog got stuck at fort funston today. but the fire department says all went well and duke is happy and healthy. no word yet on exactly how duke got stuck up there to begin with. there's the picture there from fort funston. beautiful place to be, though. coming
