this item is brought to us by our colleague carmen chu. i want to thank her for this piece of legislation that addresses some issues that we have been trying to address. supervisor chu? >> thank you. for some time, we have been dealing with the issue of public safety. in the past year, we have had a number of different incidences' that have happened either on muni buses, trains, or in and around stops. this goes toward the county's associated with crimes committed around muni stops. we know safety is a top priority for many of us, and in particular, we want to encourage members of the public to take public transportation. we also know there have been many efforts under way, including partnerships with the mta and san francisco police department, as well as the city administrator's office, who had been working tirelessly to work on an escort program so that people can go to the bus stop and feel safe doing so. this proposal would add to those efforts that are already underway, and it is only one component of a multi-faceted approach to publ

and with that, we will move into the afternoon welcome and given to us today by supervisor carmen chu and welcome her and wish her a happy birthday. >> yes, today i am turning 30, and it's a big and momentious day, thank you for sharing it with me. and i am carmen chu and the supervisor and i am here and glad of this topic and we have been working closely with the departments in the city, and not only metropolitan and transportation authority and other folks that have a big part of the solution, and one thing that we looked at in district 4, and this is an issue that touches all parts of the city, and not just west but east and pedestrian safety issues continues to be one of the most important things for my district. we have for example, 19th avenue that cuts right down our neighborhood residential neighborhood and it's a state highway and we have seen many incidents along that corridor, and there is nothing more important than to protect the pedestrian an -- pedestrians that want to walk and all individuals. and i am happy to see everyone here and these pedestrian safety issues are b
