hello, and welcome to the travel show with me, carmen roberts, coming to you this week from my localin tokyo. we've not been travelling these past few months, which has been an odd change of pace for all of us here on the programme, but over the past few years we have been to hundreds of incredible places and faced many unusual and occasionally uncomfortable situations. i faced my fear of heights jumping off the sky tower in new zealand, ignored basic safety advice and danced with scissors in peru, and played real—life mario kart down some of the busiest road in tokyo. but it's notjust me, though. all of us travel show regulars have had some pretty wild adventures, and this week we are looking back at some of our favourites. first up, in 2018, we went tojordan to mark 100 years since the culmination of the arab revolt, the legendary campaign against the ottoman empire which was famously led, it's claimed, by lawrence of arabia. we sent rajan tojordan to experience a battle re—enactment along one of the key supply lines. this is a reconstruction of one of the original trains and it us

hello, i'm carmen roberts.ou forjoining me here injapan*s capital, tokyo, for this special edition of witness history, celebrating five extraordinary moments in japanese history, as told to us by people who were there. coming up: the trees that survived the atomic bombing in hiroshima and stand as beacons of hope. the campaign to make the contraceptive pill available in japan. and an imperial wedding that broke with tradition. but first we head back to 1964, ahead of the first olympic games here in tokyo when the fastest train the world had ever seen was launched. the shinkansen, or bullet train, ran between tokyo and osaka and reached a top speed of 210 kilometres an hour. witness history spoke to one of the train*s first drivers. it looks like a bullet, this super express that thrusts aside all existing ideas on train speed. it runs on rail links a mile long on which it has reached 150 miles an hour on a trial run. even then it was not flat out. translation: nobody had ever gone that fast, - maybe on a plan

carmen roberts, accepting bookings to play to packed concert halls all around the world as soon as travels week we're off to germany, where, back in 2016, rajan headed to bavaria to learn how to play one of the strangest musical instruments i've ever seen. now, if you're thinking about taking this one up, i'd highly recommend some earplugs and kneepads. you'll see what i mean. the festival takes place in the town of rinchnach, and celebrates the ancient custom of herdsmen ringing bells to scare wolves away. hans, hello. hello! hans is one of the organisers. these other famous bells have heard about. tonight, hundreds of local people will form teams of bell—ringers, and i'm joining in too, a rare privilege for a non—bavarian. first, i need the right outfit. and what is the point of these twigs? good? i look like a christmas tree. the headgear pales into insignificance once i realise i'll be lugging this 20kg bell around. so heavy, it's ridiculous! ok, so i'm taking this bell over here and i think this will be the bavarian people doing it as well. did you hear me coming by any chance? 0h! s
