but it is stokely carmichael. when we think about stokely carmichael and what he represents and why he is so important -- he is not just appear activist for radical democracy. after becoming a black power activist he is a full blown revolutionary being an anti-war activist and critic of the system. he provides a context for the black panther party. 1965-1966 it is carmichael who goes to lions, county alabama the buckle of the black belt and helping local people and others organize for democracy in this county that is 80% african-american and no black public officials. 50 years later we have similar instances now. but in 1965 trying to organize there was hugely dangerous. they organized a freedom organization whose nickname is the black panther party. and that symbol travels all the way to oakland, california when we think about the black panther party for self-defense. so when we think about stokely carmichael who is going to be named honorary prime minister he is going to provide a platform for the anti-war movem

while we'll be doing the event at betsy carmichael it is a city-wide event. there are at least nine of our supervisors are going to be walking to schools in their districts with students from their districts throughout the city. nearly 90 schools and more than 13,000 students are expected to celebrate the day which will be a new record in term of participation. so, the school district and other schools are really stepping up the city through rec and park, department of public health, the mta and other -- the police department, strong partnership to try to raise the awareness of walk and roll to school day. the safe routes to school partnership in san francisco, of which our agency is a part, helps organize the day. what the partnership does is implement the federally funded safe routes to school program to encourage more families to walk, bike, take transit or car pool to and from school. dph, public health is the lead agency and has lots of other public and private partner. so, it will be a good -- should be a great morning if the weather holds a it should,

everybody who came through, everybody from stokely carmichael to dr. king and it was an experience. it was fascinating. there were several stories about the movement in the book. -- at old miss now, and among the things i tell my students is, that quotes really help make stories. you can think you're a wonderful writer but if you don't have good anecdotes and quotes and good description and good stories to write about, you're going to be spinning your wheels. and i'm going to start off basically with not something i wrote but quotes. the first one involved a visit that dr. king made to the delta in the spring of '68. turns out it was the last days of his life and he was there trying to rally support for the poor people's campaign. imagine here is a man with a nobel prize winner, major figure in the movement. i was only reporter covering him for a couple of days, traveling around the delta. dr. king was with jose williams and ralph abernathy. they drove around in a big sedan. i followed behind them in my little volkswagen beetle. one of the events was at a black church in marks, miss
