as soon as carmichael says this phrase black power -- and remember carmichael says this after he's arrested. he is going to say this is the 27th time he's been arrested and it's all for civil rights activity and what people have to start saying now is black power. that very phrase is going to scandalize american politics. newspapers, reporters, journalists, pundits and movement leaders are going to be split over what exactly does the term mean? in the popular imagination, ack power is usually seen as a movement that was violent, was overly aggressive, was mizz only nistic, and mercifully short lived. black power is often accused of being waged by gun-toting black militants most notably the black panthers who practiced politics without portfolio and threatened to drag down more promising movements for social justice. most late 1960s and historical accounts, black power disappears from the american landscape almost as quickly as it had first appeared. what i want to talk about tonight -- and that's a preface for this talk. what i want to talk about tonight is really historicizing black power.

its findings hadn't been published when we interviewed dr carmichael.ith me? i think it's just about ensuring that the structures around the service are robust and supportive for staff working in the service, but also that we don't comprise on the care that we provide for the young people coming to the service. the review is due to be published next month, but some staff who have already seen it say it doesn't go far enough, and they are demanding an external inquiry. gender clinics around the world are realising they need to do much more to find out what happens long—term to the children and young people who come through their doors. what we don't know is, how will they look back when they are in their adult years? do these adolescents, do these parents realise what sort of treatment they're getting, and how far—reaching the effects might be, lifelong? are they able to have long—term relationships? but also, what about their wish for children? that i think are really questions we haven't answered yet. the tavistock doesn't have all the answers, either.

probably the most important photograph i have is one where he is linked arm in arm with people such as carmichael, abraham joshua hechel, c.t. vivian, with james -- with so many people, with nuns and clerics from many denominations, united and committed to the cause of freedom. and as aaron pointed out, towards the end of his life he was not popular because people separated the cause of civil rights from the cause of human justice. and that's what the cause is. we have committed across our spectrum, we are committed to be changing for a better world, to be changing for human rights, to be changing to an end of economic injustice, as i see outside of us here in this gathering, i see the beloved community. i see people who are committed to making that change, and i pray, i pray today that we continue to do this work towards the beloved community. to make qualitative and quantitative changes in our lives, to be able to work towards justice, to make no peace with oppression, and be committed as much as on the monument to dr. king at yerba buena garden, the ultimate measure of man is not where he stan
