somehow 3-year-old carmina salcedo survived. >> i was in and out of consciousness.o i didn't know if i was going to get found. i didn't know if i was going to get help. >> when i did hear help get there for the first time, it was terrifying. i thought it was my dad coming back to see if i was dead or not. >> reporter: she rarely uses the word "dad." the man she refers to as roma r who is on death row. salcedo has been trying to deal with what she witnessed for the last 21 years. she says she went straight from that horrible ordeal into a home with abusive adoptive parents who only allowed her to listen to classical and opera. writing about her experience like she did in this book published last year helps her work out the facts. but sing is what always helps her work through her emotions. >> you can read me through my music. and that is something that's always been that way. >> reporter: salcedo can't sing for us today. that's because she made it past the first round of "american idol" audition and signed a waiver to keep her voice and the details of the show under
