carnival's booking volumnes were beginning to recover from the negative publicity from the carnival-owned costa concordia, which ran aground in italy 14 months ago killing 32 people. now, little more than a year later, carnival faces lawsuits and additional costs of flying home 4300 stranded travelers from the dutch caribbean island of st. maarten, not to mention compensating them and passengers booked on ships about to leave on trips that were cancelled while the carnival dream is moored for repairs. friday, carnival corp. stock closed down slighty at $34.95. the stock has dropped 9.4% in the last three months. the former cio of jp morgan chase is passing on blame for the monster trade that caused the bank to lose more than $6 billion. at senate hearing friday, ina drew, who managed the london unit that lost the money in a whale-sized trade, told lawmerks she was undermined while working at the bank. it was the same cruise line, carnival. but a different ship than the one that left passengers at tea for several days with no air conditioning, and unsanitary living conditions. but the problems on the cruise liner "dream" were nowhere near as nightmarish as those aboard the "triumph" just a month ago. >> our toilets weren't working and the water rose up, like you would at home, if the toilet was clogged. the water would start to rise up to the top of the bowl. >> reporter: the carnival says the "dream" got stuck in port in st. maarten's when the backup emergency generator malfunctioned during a routine inspection. the company issued a statement that at no time did the ship lose power and the ship's propulsion systems and primary power source was not impacted. the statement also said all guests are safe and comfortable with only periodic interruptions to elevators and rest room services for a few hours. >> they thought it was something minor, ended up being something more complicated, which is why we're still here. as far

take another carnival cruise?ured the ship is newer. they are going to be more cautious and that things happen. but something like this should not be a recurring issue. we scheduled it prior to that event happening. >> i'm going to read you a statement from carnival cruise that cnn managed to get ahold of. this is what carnival is saying now. at no time did the ship lose power. there were interruptions to elevators and toilets for a few hours last night. at this time all hotel systems are functioning normally and have been functional since approximately 12:30 a.m. eastern time. does that fit in with what you told me? >> i would say that's fairly accurate statement, yes. they were -- they did go down to guest services last evening. they actually didn't have a supervisor on duty until we had a crowd of people that would not bring a supervisor up. they finally called one cop that was off duty. when i spoke to him, he was completely clueless regarding the toilets overflowing on the ship. we offered to walk him around

carnival began having problems. elation had to be towed last weekend because of a malfunction in its steering. and carnival dream has been stuck in st. martin after losing power earlier in the week. all passengers are being flown back to the u.s. on carnival's dime. not the vacation they had envisioned when they set sail. the stock price took a big hit when the triumph was crippled for four days in the gulf of mexico after a fire in the engine room knocked out power. latest problem has not helped either. tom donahue of porter novelli, the global public relations agency, helps companies like carnival when they get some bad press. thank you for joining us. how bad is it? >> well, don, i think it is bad, but doesn't necessarily have to be permanent. they have to generate some more goodwill. they had problems of the mechanical time. now they need to generate some goodwill. >> goodwill. what do they do to recover? goodwill will help their stock prices and get people back on their ships and interested in going on a cruise

what the heck is going on at carnival?e, travel expert, and rachael rothman from susquehanna research group. rachael, listen, crl is down today. it's off a couple bucks from its recent high, but it's not getting crushed over the last couple of weeks, which is surprising, given these problems. what the heck is going on at carnival cruise lines? >> from a stock perspective, i think what you're seeing is investors actually becoming slightly desensitized to issues of this type, which is something we've seen happen in the past with the fast food stocks, when you have many food-related illnesses, one right after the other after the other. the first has a big impact, and then if you have another, they begin to wane. so i think what you're seeing here is the lingering effects of people being worried about macrofears in europe and the realization that 2013 may not be the great year that people had hoped, given the easy compares the from last year, rather than real headline risk associated with more incidents along the ships. >> why

the carnival dream had a technical issue. that is what carnival is saying.t. it is in the ship's back-up emergency diesel generator. and again, crews found that last night. alerted passengers. and the ship has been docked since then. now, carnival says the ship never lost power but that a few elevators and at least one bathroom had some issues. the bathroom did stop working for a few hours last night. now carnival just put out a statement. here it is. we can confirm that only one public restroom was taken offline for cleaning based on toilet overflow. aside from that, there have been no reports of any issues on board with overflowing toilets or sewage. now, this all comes a month, as you may remember, after the carnival triumph had that engine fire that crippled that ship, leaving 4,200 passengers stranded at sea for a few days. that ship had to be towed back to mobile, alabama. this does not appear to be as serious. the boat is docked in st. maarten. carnival says while crews work on that technical issue, they're on chartering planes to fly the passengers b
