carol leonning is with "the washington post."t me begin with you because you wrote that story that responded or debunked what the daily caller has said thus far. what do we now know? bring me up to speed in regard. >> what we now know is that one woman who is an escort in the dominican republic and one man, a lawyer in the dominican republic have gone to dominican authorities, sought immunity from prosecution for any involvement in a smear or slander campaign, and have sworn in affidavits that they were hoodwinked into making a tape of some sort where they recited a script about having sex for money with senator menendez and also a wealthy donor friend of his. the woman says she didn't realize she was being taped and also said she was approached and paid to make these statements and read them aloud. >> paid by whom? do we know? >> yes. she knows who paid her. it is the first lawyer who has also made another sworn affidavit. his name is mr. galvan, according to the affidavit in the dominican court. he says he also was hoodwinked.

carol? >> i was just going to add on the enforcement ad which is where the department of justice comes in, we have had a number of prosecutions of individuals that have been convicted of stolen identity refund fraud. there's been a stolen identity, they've used it to get a tax refund, or multiple tax refund to which they're not entitled to. some of those prosecutions have received sentences, ranging anywhere from a year to over 10 years. identity theft, as a crime has a very, very high sentence. and these individuals don't just steal, in general. they don't just steal one or two identities and file one or two tax returns. what we are seeing and what's being vigorously prosecuted are individuals or groups of individuals that do hundreds and hundreds of these. so, each taxpayer is injured to the tune of a couple of thousand dollars, which is certainly significant, but the perpetrators are getting refunds of hundreds of thousands of dollars. so when they're prosecuted, each instance of identity

these things take a while. >> carol, i'm very curious.people like brian bellski or my colleague who come here, and they're not alone, who talk about the valuations, what they perceive to be cheap valuations of this market. you don't see the that, though. what metrics that you're looking at that they're not looking at or vice versa? >> i think it, obviously, depends on a case-by-case basis. there are certainly some values out there. but i've talked about before the quality of earrings. sometimes the earrinnings are f in terms of their real long-term quality, because they have been injured in terms of overhead cuts or share buybacks, things that are not sustainable in the long-term. if we don't have that topline growth, then we don't that valuation that can grow over and over and over again. so if you want to command a growth valuation, you have to have growth, that means growth at the top line. otherwise, to me, it means those valuations don't hold up over long-term. >> quickly, are are those earnings fake? >> no, the quality of earnings h

>> reporter: well, here's what we know at this point, carol.n a knock came at the door of tom clements' home in an area called the black forest north of colorado springs. it's a pretty rural area, heavily wooded. and the initial information that the sheriff's office has is that he was shot in the chest as he answered the door. he was then declared dead on the scene. they immediately began a massive manhunt. it is again a heavily wooded area. they were not able to find anybody overnight in the initial parts of the investigation. now, kusa, our affiliate here, is reporting that the colorado bureau of investigation has been brought up. that's a significant ramping up of the investigation. they're a statewide agency that has a lot more resources that they can bring to bear on this manhunt. they don't have a suspect at this point. that's their main focus at this point. as you would imagine, the fact that he was director of corrections, they're going to be looking at that hard, if somebody in the prison system somehow was related to his death. carol.

carol, a lawyer gave a script to another lawyer, who found a prostitute to read it? i mean, can you walk us through what you know? it seems confusing. >> it sounds really fantastical, especially when we were given some of these documents. when my colleague translated them, what we saw was that a woman who describes herself as an escort said she was approached by a lawyer with her co-worker, they were asked if they would go to a hotel room and if they would read some language aloud. which they did. that lawyer, who they identified, has now gone to the court with them, in the dominican republic, and said he was also hood winked. a separate lawyer, a second lawyer told him he needed a videotape of some women saying they had been unfaithful with a particular client, and this client had been unfaithful against his wife, that he was a divorce lawyer. and when the tape surfaced in the daily caller, of course, it became big news in the dominican republic, and this escort and this lawyer both said, wait a minute, that's us. we didn't realize that we were slandering a u.s. sen

>> i'm with carol. we're going to shrug this off as well. the gdp of cyprus is roughly the same as boise, idaho. it's not a huge risk for the markets overall. >> i guess the bigger issue is, are the headlines coming out of cyprus a recipe for other economies in terms of that whole business, in terms of taxing depositors, and we know that we continue to have issues in terms of the debt crisis. we are not, necessarily, seeing solutions there. >> i think you see -- if that fear were true, you would see it reflected in the peripheral european countries. i think they mark scyprus as a special case. >> mark, how are you investing at this point? you've got $54 million under management there. you've been bullish. do you want to put new money to work here, even though the market is up 10% year-to-date? >> short answer, yes, maria. the fact of the matter is, we think the fundamental underpinnings, particularly domestically, continue to be encouraging, and we're encouraging investors as a result of some of the volatility we've had in non-u.s. equity ma
