bill and carol raised three boys. ron, the youngest, remembers how involved his dad was. >> i can remember going out to the lake on the boat. i remember going out to the desert. he was my coach when i was racing bicycles. it was a good time. >> good times for ron. for carol, not so much. the young mother of three was feeling unfulfilled, stifled by her husband. what's your way of telling that story? >> i grew up. simple as that. he controlled me. he tried everything to control me. >> here she was married for a decade almost 30 years old. she wanted more out of life and so she got a job as a clerk working the night shift at the sheriff's department. she took classes on police procedures including one on fingerprinting hoping she might become a deputy herself one day. she started hanging out after hours with some officers shooting pool having a few beers. >> things just began to be too obvious. >> too obvious how? what do you mean? was she seeing other guys? >> yeah. i didn't do anything about that until i came home one

carol? >> it's a very early hour in the morning, barbara. how many people do you think are in that building right now? >> well, this is washington and the bureaucracy, the u.s. military starts early. the reports were three shots were fired at 8:20 this morning east coast time, here in washington. at that hour i would say that almost everyone was in the buildi building. you mentioned a news report the fourth floor. we'll try and get more information what exactly is located on the fourth floor in that building. is this someone moving through the building? is there one looking for a particular spot or office in the building and once again how on earth did they get some totally unauthorized weapon inside the building? there are regular security forces in the building as there are in so many washington, d.c., buildings and across the u.s. military but this situation is very much described active shooter, more than three shots fired, several people injured. the belief is those injured are getting

>> reporter: good morning, carol.l, the problem for house republicans is if they can pass this bill tomorrow, that would fund the government but defund health care, republicans say they know that kind of legislation would not pass the democratic-controlled senate and of course the president wouldn't sign it because he would never sign a law that would overturn his signature achievement, which is health care reform. now, here's the problem that happens if the republicans are able to pass this bill. the senate could then pass a bill that both funds the government and health care and then they would send that bill back to the house. now, if that bill fails, that would shut down the government and that would be, of course, deeply unpopular with the american people. and senior republicans are saying that is an ill conceived strategy. this summer oklahoma senator tom coburn made some remarks about that. here's what he had to say. >> the only effective way to truly stop obama care, and i think we ought to do it, to stop it,

i'm carol costello. pope francis because he has shocked catholics around the world with harsh criticism of some of the catholic church's top priorities and this morning his words are rocking the american conservative catholic community. the new pontiff telling reporters the church he now leads is "obsessed with abortion, homosexuality, contraception and other social issues." this morning on "new day" the conservative president of the catholic league bill donahue sat down with chris cuomo. donahue was clearly not happy with how the pope's remarks on homosexuality are being characterized. >> i will always tell the truth. if 81% of the victims are male and 100% of the victimizers are male, and if 78% of the victims are post pubej scent, it's not pedophilia, it's homosexuality. >> the catholic league president didn't pull any punches who is to blame. >> when men have sex with adolescent men it's called homosexuality. it is not pedophilia. john j. college of criminal justice is not a conservative right wing o
